Stock vs. Stock I think you would edge him out. With stage II chips you shouldn't have any trouble walking a stock L98.

He is going to race you from 40 mph??? That is unfair - you should give a stock l98 a slight headstart from 40. Those things hit the wall at around 95.

I take it this is a C4 we're talking about. What year is it? The 84's were fairly weak compared to the later L98s.

tell him to roll his windows down so you don't suck the glass out of them when you blow past, assuming your car is running as it should be.

I actually have 10 cousins, but 2 are of my age and drive fast cars. This is the L98 with the tuned port injection and the 4 + 3 transmission. It is an 86 and it is totally stock. my cousin with the vette is dan, the one with the m3 is mark, but anyway, what's the top speed of a L98? special tool, you said those things hit a wall after 95.

Back when the first C4 came out in '84 or so, it got rave reviews as being one of the fastest cars out there. They did one of those big-oval test events and it was fastest at 155mph.

If the engine in his L98 is the original, it's probably pretty tired by now. I'd chip your car and crank up the boost just to sure to spank him though.

The acceleration starts to decline. Most owners don't generally notice, however, what with all the creaks and rattles.

You will beat him. I remember last year when I had my first 951 and all I had were chips, mbc at 16psi, and testpipe. Guess what pulls up? An old man in a C5 vette automatic reving. LOL first time I ever seen a mid life crisis this bad. We both took off like a bat out of hell. I hit second and the nose of my car was on his passenger front wheel hit third and we stayed side by side after that until we had traffic up ahead and we both had to slow down. To say the least I was very impressed. I thinkn the automatics really slow those cars down bad. However my first 951 with 200k always felt faster than my second one.. weird how that works?

I'm definately interested in seeing that video. I work with a guy who's got a 91 l98 with 6 speed.. what they hey is a "4+3 transmission" by the way?

I rode in his car and was pretty impressed, lot of torque.. I wonder how much those cars weigh.

can't wait to get my new turbo so I can "suck the windows off" all the rice and heavy muscle I see every day...

Just my 2 cents.

Last week, I pulled on an automatic C4 L98 Vette on a standing start. At that time, my 951 was running on seriously worn spark plugs, an air filter that needed to be changed and crappy tires running on metal. The only known mod is a boost controller @ 15 PSI on a good day. At the light, the guy talked about his newest installation: brand new 275mm wide ZR tires. He had the perfect setup to beat my 951, but even babying the clutch I still pulled about a carlenght on him on a 0 to 80 mph acceleration. At that speed, I started to pull hard on him but my point was proven. At the next light, the guy looked sad and asked me what were my mods, thinking that an almost stock 951 couldn't pull on him on a standing start. <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />

With a properly tuned 951, you shouldn't have problems beating one. Instead, you should play with LT1-LS1 'Vettes.

well the video is soon to be set up. The 4+ 3 transmission is a 4 speed manual transmission with three over drive gears. There is a button on top of the stick and when you press it, it makes the gear longer, or at least thats what it feels like. If you keep it engaged, and you floor it, it automatically downshifts. it's a very weird system. A lot of people say that when you look for a vette, avoid that transmission. It's a bad system. well anyway, wish me luck. later.
