Post Compression Test

Where should the compression be on a healthy 944 Turbo engine (non S)?? If I remember correctly last year I got around 135-137psi across the board.

The manual states 10 bar, or 145psi as a lower acceptable limit

...on a 16+ year old car, 145's across the board would be more of a perfect score than a lower acceptable number

If you do it warm, 140-150 is normal.

Though just as important as that is that all cylinders are nearly equal..with 10-15% between them as a maximum.

125 is low, 160 is high on a 90k motor. Again, most important is the differential in the numbers across the cylinders.

Here's something guaranteed to screw you up.

Do a compression test on a car with a big cam!

I almost died when I got 115psi across the board!

The I remembered the big cam!

Talk about a scare!

I did mine last week on a rebuilt motor with about 900 miles on it...It was 130, 125, 130, 130...Not sure about my gauge...The thing runs flawlessly.

my old motor had 151 152 135 150. a big "uh oh" light should have gone off in my mind... hmm, and guess which cyl. was the "problem" one not long thereafter?

Just did mine on warm engine (but not a full operating temp) and not sure how accurate the guage is.

120, 129, 135, 128

A little low or just becasue not at full operating temp?

How do you test the turbo motor's compression, pull the IC pipe off and pin the TB open?

Pull all the plugs and insert compression-gauge (pressure-gauge). Basically 0-200psi gauge with a hose hooked up to it with threads that matches the threads of the engine you're testing:

Snap-on Compression tester
Star Compression tester

I understand you should keep the throttle wide open to get accurate results, but what about the AFM, turbo, etc?

I remember getting between 145~150 on all cylinders, the car wasn't fully warm, it was sitting for 30~45 mins after driving for a while. Which i guess is a good engine? but i need a leak tester though.

Oh crap, I didn't have the throttle wide open.

How much difference does that make?
