"I would beat 1/2 of the 5.0 Mustangs I raced in my turbo mazda 626. The losing Mustangs always (I'm not saying you did this, but it is common) shifted into the next gear far before redline. They want to feel the torque thrust, but are missing out on the h/p. Most all cars are quickest when shifted at redline, or very close to it."
Ah ha!!! There's the problem. The dropping torque-curve and optimal shift-pattern has been hotly-contested on this baord before. What a lot of people (and apparently Mustang drivers) forget to take into account is the torque-multiplication that is done by the tranny. You can get over 1000 lb•ft of torque at the rear wheels after it's gone through 1st gear! Even with lower and dropping torque, you'd still end up with higher torque on the ground at redline in 1st gear than at the torque-peak in 2nd.
Now the 6000rpm redline of most Mustangs, even the 4-valve ones, may indicate some inefficient breathing and perhaps even a faster torque-drop than our 951s (hard to believe). If anyone has a dyno-chart of a stock 5.0-GT and the new 4.6-SVT, I'd love to analyize the acceleration rates in each gear.

the latest 390/390 SVT's are boosted too, so it makes it harder for a 951 to keep up in a straight line. The SVT's are nowhere near 50/50 weight distribution though and no where near rattle free
...
Even if you go 3.1L conversion, the SVT can still go to 5.7+...but it's still a Ford under the skin and the interior/exterior to many makes it just another Mustang. Nice car, but no Porsche.

Yes, but only the 1400 pound suspension is garbage

Bill
A stock 86 944 Turbo puts out 220hp (183rwhp) and weights 2,800lbs. That puts it at 12.8 lbs per horsepower.
I'm not sure where got that weight figure, but it ain't even close to correct.
I weighed my last 1986 944 turbo. With 1/4 tank, and all other fluids, without the driver, and without the spare tire/jack/toolkit, the car weighed almost 2960lbs. or 2980lbs. (I can't remember which as this was a few years ago).

Get beat by a cobra in a 951 off the line dude you need launch lessons. I own both types of cars and specialize in mustang and lt-1 ls-1 gm's. My 951 easily eats 97 up vettes and camaro birds off line they usually try to play catch up and never get it. the only stangs to worry about are the 5 liters with extensive mods and a good driver or an 03 cobra. The 4.6 2 valvers pre 99 were horrible and it takes considerable work to make them something. The 99 cobra was a joke and ford had to make drastic recall changes due to the fact they were getting blasted by the gt's. The process was so drawn out no cobras were built in 00 except the 5.4l R. they restarted production on cobras in 01 and went to the blown cars in 03. One of the 01 cobra verts I have built ran 13.6 stock with me driving owner was considerably slower. car weighed in at 4100 at edgewater

Whew!...Is this a Drag Racing forum/Fast and the Furious forum or a Porsche forum.Drag racing Mustangs???I thought a Porsche was about balanced performance with awesome handling. No wonder SOME of you 944 guys have the "almighty 951 Big boost mentality".I tell you,I rather get a thrill out of leaving a guy in a turn then on a straight road.Wiping a guy on a straight road is no fun or skill.Well maybe a little skill, but not much.Im not trying to flame, just checking out what goes on over here.
