And to think of it, what would 12 - 16 year old subaru / Mitsu look like..and feel like..

So to be fair, put $30k of mods into both and see what happens.
Now wait to see how well the Lacer and STi hold up for 16 years. The Porsche wins the endurance test hands down.

Our cars are more like a current $66k car. There's no getting around the fact that cars keep getting better (both performance-wise and value-wise).

Impressive performance, hopefully this will force other manufacturers of poser-pseudo sports cars to "get real". On the other hand it's ugly with very cheap appearance <img border="0" alt="[oops]" title="" src="graemlins/oops.gif" /> . For the money my choice would be WRX STi <img border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" title="" src="graemlins/bigok.gif" />

I just hope it's 'on-track' performance is better than the 2002 WRX, which was, to be polite; lame-o. Wayyy to heavy, and softly sprung. AWD doesn't do diddly-poop on a dry track, except suck-up power in the drivetrain

If that means wouls cost $60k today, that would slide the bang for the buck closer to the STi and Lancer Evo. They would be the better performing cars off the showroom floor but I maintain that the Porsche have staying power. They would last 16-20 years and be worth more at the end of that timeframe.
Just my .02

We do have to remember that back in the late 80's, the world of performance cars was very different than today. The 951 was one of the highest performing cars of its time and it had no Japanese competition to speak of.
To recall what it was like in the '80's, here's a direct quote from the June '88 issue of Automobile magazine on its review of the Turbo S:
"...on 90 percent of this country's twisty roads--and for 99 percent of its drivers--this is the fastest car from point A to point B on the market today."
I also have a very interesting article from an '88 issue of the British 'Performance Car' magazine comparing the Turbo S to the Ferrari 328. Here's a quote:
"It [the Turbo S] represents the crushing victory of technology over engineering convention and customer prejudice: demolishing almost all opposition within the vast sweep of its performance, it proves that four cylinders can do everything that five, six, eight--even 12--can achieve."
If I get around to it, I'll scan the full article and post it.

Thats pretty damn quick but IMHO they are just plain fugley no soul <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> . Plus you are still driving a Mitsu <img border="0" alt="[nono]" title="" src="graemlins/nono.gif" /> . BTW I sold Mitsu's for a while a few years ago. They were cheaply made.
I'll stick with my 951 LP <img border="0" alt="[bigbye]" title="" src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" />
