Post How much oil, if any, should a 951 burn?

On a car with 150K miles, what is an expected amount of oil to add between oil changes? Any idea? And if the answer is "It shouldn't burn any", then what number of things would cause the loss of oil?

I was using a litre of oil per 1000 miles for a while. I had a leakdown test done and there was blowby past the rings on one cylinder. You will find that there is an acceptable amount of oil use on older cars - something along the lines of the 1 litre per 1000 miles. As far as what can cause oil consumption there are many things. Scored cylinder walls will cause oil to go past the rings, oil can enter the cylinder past the valves if they are not seating properly or can come in past the bearing on the turbo. You could have an oil leak somewhere as well.

O.K. all of those reasons make sense. What kinds of things can one do to remedy those problems?

According to the specifications a 951 can use 1½ liter/1000 km's - if I remember it correctly.

I think a small amount of oil use is fairly normal by that age. Probably the only way to minimize it would be to rebuild the engine. However Porsche I have heard has said that even up to 1 quart per 1000 miles even on engines in good shape could be normal and acceptable. There probably will be a little disappear/burn anyway since there is usually a little blow by from the turbo which you will find on your intercooler pipes as an oil film.

I wouldn't expect it to not to burn any....maybe a perfect engine might not....but mine doesn't smoke and goes through probably a quart or just over between changes. More if I use the boost more it seems, but I've only driven the car about 4000 miles.

Cheers!

I've had mine now sence December and the turbo and seals are great, compression is great and plugs show no sign of oil. I will use about 1/2 quart every 500 - 600 miles if I dont drive hard. Double that if I'm on boost a lot.

Hey,

I used to use about 1 quart a day when at the track.
My headgasket went and I had a machine shop redo
the head. The shop told me that my valve stem seals
and valve guide were worn out (very common on these
cars) After I had those replaced, my oil consumption
when at the track went to ZERO.

My car has 69K miles on it.

Nope....shouldn't be a real problem. My car has good compression and leakdown and still uses some and the turbo is in great shape on mine as well. If you have done leakdown and compression and they are good, shouldn't be any biggie as long as your turbo is healthy. Then drive and enjoy it!!!!

Cheers!

I used to loose a quart in 40 - 100 miles and the car drove just great. It had 250K+ on it and the turbo seals were . . . well, bad, but it boosted hard and didn't visably smoke like a 911 w/ bad valves or anything. I guess it all depends on where your loosing it.

Yes, your 951 is supposed to burn oil. They have a low oil light for this. When it comes on you need to add a quart of oil. I believe it is supposed to use 1 quart per 1500 mi.
