really good read;

a 3.0 R&P would be a better choice. but at 4 grand i just couldn't see doing it at this time. anyway, i'm ordering my .729 5th and .600 6th gears tomorrow from Scott. 1 through 4 and the gap between 4th and 5th presents a compromise.... but, in the link you can see what even a mild cam and upgraded valve springs can do on the stock heads for the LS3. 400 + hp all the way from 4500 to 7000 rpm comes pretty close to solving the 'gear gap' problem for a street car... we can't run headers with such mild bends, (as the setup in the above link) so power will be down, but even before going to the improved valve springs, you can expect to see near 500 hp at the flywheel w/ the LS3 crate, hotcam and Eric's TPC heads.
i'm sending the transmission down to Scott in Corpus in two weeks and i'm ordering all my swap parts this week from XS Chop and Eric along with all the other stuff related to the clutch, bellhousing and serpentine... i'll pick up the crate in June or July from these guys...

to be honest, i'm pretty stoked.

went ahead and purchased the taller .729 5th and .600 6th gears that will fit the 968 box for $1,610.
talked to Matt at Texas Speed and Performance for about 20 minutes today. this company has a religious following among the Chevy people.... http://www.texas-speed.com/shop/ ... i was hoping there was a way to get smooth running engine in the low (1,200~2,000) rpm range that could make power up to 6,500 rpm and close to 500 hp..... here's what Matt was able to come up with for a very easy, low-cost upgrade for the LS3 crate;
1. "don't buy the engine with the hotcam..." (he say's it's really not a very good cam).
instead, start with a bone stock crate engine, remove stock cam and add a stock LS7 cam from ebay.
2. send heads out for porting + add better Comp Cams valve springs. about ($1,300)
3. run Eric's (Texas Performance Concepts) 1 3/4" long tubes w/ ceramic coating, build a good y-pipe, etc.
after the y-pipe, i'm going to run two triangular resonators in series, a 3 1/4 pipe and longer, 24" Magnaflow, for a quiet engine that will still make good power.... this still leaves the option of adding a Fast intake later (if it would fit under the hood) and keep the 90mm throttle body for running either intake.
the exhaust will see some minor restriction on the straight through resonators/muffler combo, but after tuning, the result should be a bone smooth/quiet engine just after idle and be able to make 470~480 hp at the flywheel, with the potential to raise that number higher by adding the 'Fast' intake later.
might do well to clip the resonators at 1 corner for better fitment up into the exhaust cutaway.

I've spoken with Albins. They are the only ones to make the 3.4, and it will take a 12 weeks. The more we get, the more discount we can get. It's about 4 grand now. Thom, if you or anyone else wants to go for it, let me know and I'll get the best deal I can from Albins.

Just re-read this thread and there's some good info in here. To digress, I thought I'd post a few pics of the 6 speed trans I got built by CMS. Currently it has stock gearing as I think this will work well on the track/s that I run at. Might consider a longer set of 5th and 6th if I make it to Bathurst one of these years. As for the gearbox, it was fully rebuilt, had some cross drilling done to increase oil distribution. It was tapped to run an external oil cooler and also has one of the aforementioned CMS billet side plates for further strengthening. I went with the KAAZ 6 plate LSD at Roger's recommendation. The trans looks absolutely brand spanking new and as you can see in the pics, their workshop looks spotless.
Very impressed with the whole process in dealing with Roger at CMS. Highly recommended for top quality work.

that is beautiful. congratulations. today was the big day for me... i owe a huge thanks to Roger at CMS for educating me about the possibilities of setting up one of theses boxes for the bigger engine.. and especially pointing out how important it would be to get the taller 5th gear installed as well. well i just took deliverery on my finished box with the long 5th (.729/160 mph/6000 rpm) and 6th (.600/190 mph/5880 rpm).... huge thanks so Scott Dewitt at Advanced Automotion for locating these gears...
transmission with 48 k miles; $1,800
purchase 5th and 6th gearsets; $1,730
labor to install/(4 hours)/misc parts/(local Getrag specialist); $620
total; $4,150 ... yes, i think i got off easy, and i've got my spare transmission (in the car).
oh almost forgot, how do i get mine all polished up nice like that?

If I were going a V8 I would have done a G50 transmission swap but that's a more complex fitment.
I'm not sure how CMS cleaned up that trans, but it looks brand new from the Factory. The Billet sideplate also adds to the shine. Won't stay shiny under there for ever though.

no. but there are many interchangeable parts, rebuild kits etc.. the person to talk to is Scott Dewitt at Advanced Automotion or Roger at California Motorsports depending on what 01e transmission you're talking about. the gearsets are sourced from an audi 2wd diesel part inventory. the 4wd 5th and 6th gears from other 4wd 01e boxes are not compatable.

3.44 final drive is interesting proposition to me as well. I tried to read through all of this. So many names and prices I got confused several times..
So it's 4000$ now and it still takes 10 to make it happen?

not necessary... back in March, i asked Roger at cms what was the closest we would be able to get to between a 2.95 and 3.10 (what i concluded was most desirbable) and he went to the gear manufacterer (albins) and they did some tests... closest they would be able to get to and still have it fit and work properly was a 3.30: 1. (i think it was a 33/10 and $4,000 for a 1 of 1... fair enough. it's a perfect gear for a turbo... but not quite enough gear for leaving 5th and 6th stock on the 490 hp V8 that's going in... in a perfect world i would have said 'go for it.' and went a head and ordered a set of Turbo S 0.882 5th and 0.711 6th gears to go along... but an extra $4 k to have better ratios from 1 through 4? i'm already spending an extra grand on a mild comp cams/valvespring/pushrood and install on a virgin crate. i just couldn't see spending the extra $$$.
