That's a long gap between 5th and 6th. Where's your redline? Seems like it would be fine if you just considered 6th an "economy" gear, but if you ever hit the top of 5th at full throttle and wanted to keep accelerating, it looks like you'd lose a disturbing number of revs.

It does look like it would be a big rpm drop George but as you say you won't need 6th for virtually any tracks unless you were going to ship it to Europe to go play at the 'Ring!!!

I don't think you'd ever want a large gap between top gear and the next highest gear. It's human nature to always be in the highest gear when not accelerating/cruising.
And in this state, with an overly tall top gear, an otherwise high hp car will seem slugish when climbing hills or modestly pulling away from other traffic, without having to drop a gear. Not what I would want in a supposedly powerful car.

Joe, i'd love to come in, as this is a great deal, but the 3.4 r&p just doesn't get me to the highway economy i'm looking for, for the engine i've chosen for my swap.... as i have mentioned, i prefer to have that 'gap' between 4th and 5th, which is accomplished by installing the much longer 5th gear that is ALSO available from that same Audi 2wd box...
of course, my 194 mph @ 6,000 rpm combo only works for a street car.
968 transmission with audi 2wd diesel 5th and 6th;
1st; 3.182 :1
2nd; 2.000 :1
3rd; 1.435 :1
4th; 1.111 :1
5th; 0.729 :1 (gap between 4th and 5th)
6th. 0.600 :1
final ratio 3.778
btw, i have yet to see a 505 hp long block (what would be this 480 hp LS3 and then just adding Eric's long headers) for this low a price..... i'm going to inquire and see about getting an order done in about 2~3 more weeks.

(price does not include the harness or computer).

I thought I would post this site I have found helpfull in the past with Audi 01E transaxles some might have seen it before. Shows all the different gearing as 5th and 6th gears from only 2wd AUDI units are all interchangeable with our 01E based 968 transaxle. I have talked with Audi Wholesale and the .684 and .710 6th gear set are available and here in stock. They are around $500 before shipping and know that the tail section and gear swapping in our transaxles is very easy with simple puller and tools as per factory workshop manual! For the 3 liter 8 valve turbo guys who have a mild motor with 350 - 400 HP these 2 sets are a great higher mile per hour and better fuel economy gear for cruising at CA legal 75mph freeway speeds and the drop from 5th to 6th with the .710 is only around 650 rpms
So who knows what is specifically different about the Audi 01E 2wd and quattro models transmissions 5th and 6th gear sets Scott uh um? Is the fact that the transaxle main shafts from different models has a different spline count? I know that the quattro cars have the different tail sections for rear drive line but does this change the dimensions inner or outer for them not to be able to work in the 2wd models? Ie the 968 version!

I enjoy shifting gears as much as the next man but I think a big drop into top gear might be a bit bothersome. Granted, George's car is a lot more powerful than a standard car so it will be interesting to see how this works out. I would think that the circumstances of shifting from 5th into 6th may be used more often on the Hwy at less than peak rpms in which case the drop could be quite significant. Look forward to seeing the results of this.

The 2wd 01E never came to USA/Canada so you cannot source 01E 2WD gears through the North American Parts system. Also the 2WD never came with a .71 5th and .68 6th, the gears you mentioned are gear sets suitable for the 4WD gearbox and will not fit the 2WD 01E's.
The 2WD box and 4WD gearbox share the same input shaft, 1-2 gears, diff carrier, diff case, and center housing however most everything else is different.

Got it so long story short you have to pay big bucks, $700 for the taller sixth gear set from a USA shop who has purchased the 2wd ROW only 6th gear sets in bulk from a European supplier!

transmission with 48 k miles to send out; $1.8 K
new 5th and 6th gears; $1.5 k
labor to install (Scott) and shipping; about $.7 k
total; about $4 k
spare transmission (currently in car); priceless.

I know you guys are joking around but that's cheap.
RPM Motorsports in AZ builds the baddest transmissions for vettes, with custom gears for about the same money. I checked because after getting prices upwards of 7-8k for our transmissions from California Motorsports, and Carquip, I was going to say screw it and put a GM tranny in. Add about 4k for labor to do it and it's the same price.
This is the best price for gears for our cars. most of you guys are cool with the power you are putting down. But for me, the stock gears are worthless because of my power. And that's not even counting the upgrades up getting. So, for me, this is the way to go. I just thought I'd share this info in case some of you with more power wanted more out of your car.

Joe, you're right. It is cheap for sure.
Just to clarify, what was it that you found wanting about your stock gearbox in terms of the gearing itself? I know you've wanted taller gearing for higher top speed, but is this the only reason you want to change?

I wanted to stay in the power band longer. These gears were meant for a car that has less than half of my power. I get sick of shifting so much. Even on the track this ring and pinion would be better. Again, the 968 Turbo S used a 3.4 ring and pinion and it only had about 360 hp IIRC.
I mean, for the guys only putting down 400 or less, I can see sticking with the tranny. But for big power, these tranny's are useless. Plus I like the fact that in sixth gear I can just lope around 2k rpm and get great gas mileage.
