In 1987 or early 1988 there was an article in car & driver or automobile mag with both the turbo and the turbo s comparing both cars with a complete road test. Does anyone know what mag it was and which issue? I've got most of the articles on the Turbo S's and I've never seen what you describe. Since the S's came along later in 88, I doubt it would be an 87 issue. There is one that compares the 930 to the 944 Turbo S in Automobile, recently a good scan was posted here somewhere...Maybe that is the article you were thinking of???

June 88 Road & Track had a test on the Turbo S and they did a race track comparison against a 87 Turbo.
