Default Cam gear retaining bolt.. to drill or not to drill?

OK everyone, I have destroyed 2 cheese head adapters trying to get the cam gear bolt off my N/A.. bolt just isnt moving..

Should I drill off the head and go from there?

Any reason not too?

Discuss...

Yup, just drill straight down the center, slowly increasing in size until the head pops off. Once the head is off, the bolt will turn out by hand. You can take a new bolt and judge how deep you need to drill...it isn't far.

Thanks, wanted to bounce the idea before making myself take the cam to a machinist to remove the bolt... will be drilling tonight! Already have a new bolt on hand, just need another cheese head driver...

Make sure you have a couple of drill bits to play with - the newer the better. Little cutting oil might help as well. I hate that bolt!

I've just about killed myself trying to get one off. An impact gun will usually zip it right off though.

Drill worked quicker than an impact!

and make him choke on 8v rotor adapters?

I took apart my S first, and cursed it, but it's CAKE compared to the stupid cam drive system on the Turbo!

Yeah, you can drill that head off in less than a minute - literally. I end up doing that frequently.

it helps a TON using a torch and just heating up the head of the bolt(till glowing red and smoking) then quickly (before it cools too much) impact it off... I have done this dance about 20 some odd times building engines for customers..... the locktite crap that they use is HEAT activated to loose(burn) up and release the bolt....
Glad to hear that you got it off!!!

Carl
