Default Using 951 Foglights as Headlights?

Hey guys I know I've seen a few guys on here that have converted their foglights to Euro spec and use them as their headlights. I just have a few questions reguarding it:

I was wondering if you have done this what state you are in? Street Legal?

Also how did you wire the lights? (just tap into the factory headlight harness?)

I am thinking about doing this to my car to cut some weight and make it easier to deal with light adjustment. I was thinking about using hella universal 90mm projectors but I like the look of the stock fogs.

It certainly wouldn't be "legal" in the US, as the lights would not meet the minimum height standard as required by the Fed's. How well it would work? Others will have to chime in, I'd suspect for occasional night time driving, you could get by with it but its not going to be a replacement for the real thing.

For what its worth, I have had the same idea, for the same reasons.

If it wouldn't be street legal i could still do the universal hella projectors, they are street legal and just remove the foglights and make a mount. They have the projectors in hi beam, low beam and bi beam.. I might just have to got that route.

The problem is that headlights have to be a minimum of 24" above the ground to be legal in the US (iirc), the foglights are below that.

Someone did this a while ago. You might have to search for it. He put HID's in his foglights to use as headlights, because he had a header panel that deletes the headlights. It was a few year back. They worked great for him.

I have HIDs in my fogs and I leave the headlights down and I have not had any trouble with "Johnny Law" ever....

The only time running your lights like this isn't "legal" is when they catch you for it...

That being said, I would have no qualms about running fog lights as headlights, as long as the pop-ups still functioned normally for back up and I think on the highway or extended drives I would use the pop-ups anyway.

Paragon has a kit available:

a little spendy, but I was thinking of doing it someday.

very nice... is a little pricey but i'm sure it's worth it to get the euros.. worst comes to worst I'll get a high or low beam projector and mount it behind the foglight and remove the factory bulb/reflector pieces that way my fogs would be rather bright cause currently my headlamps are terrible

If you want to update your headlights go with the Euro H4 kit and the rennbay harness. It will make a difference. Eventually I will be going with this kit.

Cheaper option would be to get a generic H4 harness and some E code lenses.

I have the Euro fogs, and they work fairly well...

...However...

If I ever get stopped, I can just flip up the REAL lights, and say that I hadn't realised it had gotten that dark yet.

But they're not QUITE as good as E-codes, even despite the fact that I have 110-Watt PIAA bulbs in there.

For the main flip-up lights, I have marchal Ampilux units, which were standard fitment on lots of Le Mans cars in the 70's and 80's. -they are FANTASTIC, and have separate reflectors for main beam abd dipped beam, to European spec. -They neatly avoid the problems with height, and the pattern is great.

-But delete the flip-ups, and you roll the dice with the next time that you're pulled over. -If they spot it, you're screwed.

All in all, if I pop up the mains and pull on the stalk, I get 660Watts of serious power... (about enough to roast a deer, if it's not moving quickly!) -With the flip-ups not used, that visibility is SERIOUSLY compromised.

is there any advantage in running a fog lamp as a headlight as opposed to the regular pop ups? I understand with HIDs, it'll have better lighting capabilities, but isn't it easier to just upgrade the regular headlight housings?

Yes, when you run your fog lights there is less drag.

With pictures, and no I didn't hack it into the headlight wiring...

And No it isn't legal to use them as headlights... the 100W bulbs are WAY too bright, and improperly aimed for this, but DAMN they are bright!

God that was forever ago...
