Default shift linkage at trans is loose?

My shift has been loose for a while and I want to fix it. I have a new shifter upfront and i know that solved part of the problem, but it is still loose. In 3rd gear, I can move the shifter side to side about 2 inches. This has to be the linkage at the trans. I know there are rubber bushings and stuff back there. I might also go for a short shifter on the trans. My questions are:

-What part do I really need?

-Where can I buy the shift linkage for the trans?

Thanks!

Make sure the two screws holding the shifter assembler to the shifter rod and red locktite/safetywire them in place. You do NOT want to lose one of these bolts while driving, it's almost impossible to find one locally. If they're even slightly loose the shift lever will feel sloppy.

I had one of the small bolts at the trans fall out once. I had the same symptoms, sloppy shifter and it didn't feel like I was in gear at times. Just like Scott said, replacing them is VERY difficult and isn't something you want to have to worry about when you're away from your garage. If I remember correctly, I had to call Parts Heaven and have them send me the entire trans-mount shift linkage to replace the bolts. I'd get your car up on a lift and start checking things out now, before you have a serious problem.

As far as the short shifter on the trans, I don't have any experience with them but I'm sure it couldn't hurt.

You may or may not want a short shifter.

Check the small pointed bolt underneath the rubber boot and make sure that the tip is properly seated in the hole on the linkage. If that was loose it will solve your problem.

It is, everything upfront is fine and tight.

do you mean you've checked underneath by the trans and it's ok? everyone so far is telling you to look underneath and I'm not getting that you have. not being mean but I'm not sure you're understanding where to look.

You may want to switch to a short shifter at the trans either way. I noticed a big decrease in throw and the shifts are much more crisp than my poor old worn out floppy original.

Same thing happened to me. The linkage on your tranny is lose. Set the gear lever in the correct position and tighten the bolt. Did not even have to jack my car and took less than 10min to fix.

Yeah we are talking about the linkage. That is where your problem is. Don't forget to pull back the rubber boot and make sure that bolt is tight.

THAT rubber boot is on the end plate of the torque tube where the rod goes from the transmission forward to the lever in the car.
