Default Brakes

I was just doing some browsing as my brakes squeal like mad. Going to lube up some parts in the upcoming weeks. Anyways I was looking at rotors and actually found some on rockauto for dirt cheap. Some are as cheap as $30 or $50. Does anyone have any expierence with these? It seemed really really cheap. At that price I would almost just replace it all and be done with it.

Can you have these rotors turned at all? Mine are warped, but I think they may have groves in them. Also what are some good street pads that are low dust, low noise, and stop decent.

For street driving I think that basically any rotor will work. For heavy track use the cheaper ones don't seem to hold up (even Zimmerman in my experience).

Squeeling, though, is usually caused by pad vibrations which may occur regardless of the condition of the rotor, so replacing rotors may not solve the problem. However, if they are warped as you say, they should be turned or replaced anyway. At $30, it's probably cheaper and more convenient to replace than have them turned.

Do you have anti-squeel shims behind your backing plates? If not, picking up a set of these may help. You could also put anti-squeel gunk between the shim and backing plate for extra insurance.

I have the anti squeal stuff. So I was thinking of look at the brakes and making sure everything was lubed up good, then putting that gunk stuff on the back.

Don't know about the rotors but I've been using Mintex pads for years and they don't squeal and brake dust is virtually nonexistent.

Where do you buy them from? How is the performance?

Performance is fine for an aggressively driven street car. I'm very pleased with them. You can get them at Automotion.com.

Default Permatex Extreme

Not all anti-squeal lubricants are created equal. My brakes were also making much noise and it was very annoying when stopping at an intersection.

When I replaced the rear brakes I added the Permatex Extreme sans shims. The brake noise is almost totally gone now.

There are many cheap products that are available. After much research I found Permatex makes several grades with the Permatex Extreme being their best. It is a 100% synthetic lubricant.

I was unable to find the purple bottle (Extreme) at the common auto spart stores (lesser versions were readily available), but the more serious commercial auto parts store will have it in stock.

Company product link - Permatex Extreme

Good luck.
