Oil bath? That little hole is the "oil bore" right? It was sitting since July, so I'm sure oil has drained out if it could.

I store them in a clean covered container, in order, with the oil hole facing up. Oil bath always seemed like overkill to me. I just run them in carefully and use assembly lube. If they are not fully pumped up, you can hear it.

when i took it off for a headgasket, all the lifters just fell out unexpectedy. me and dad measured up the lifters and found they where all the same size everywhere not even a size difference to a piece of hair! we then installed them in a particular order where 4(1,2,3,4) had equal height and the other 4(5,6,7,8) had equal height, but like i said, half a hair difference. it was installed 1,5,2,6,3,7,4,8 and this was done in March & it's my daily, unsure how many miles since odometer turns when it wants to but still works
thats my $0.02
thats my $0.02

The order issue is about the wear pattern on the face matching the cam. Any time you have two items that work together the surfaces will wear to match each other. If you look at the face of the lifter you will see concentric wear marks – that’s where the cam and lifter have been wear matched.
In our cars its not as big a deal as American V8s – they have much higher spring pressures and a rocker ratio that increases the pressure. Its not a big deal if they get mixed up, but ‘best practice’ is to keep them matched.
