Its just a depression for positioning the block during production. It doesnt go anywhere, it just looks like it does. Its just there to build up gunk

Hi, thanks for the reply.

It sure looks like it goes somewhere - it's difficult to see using a mirror but there looks like a machined hole of about 1cm diameter sitting at the very bottom of the recess

Maybe I'll block it off just in case.

There is no need to block it off. It is just as Brian described. I can take a photo of my engine since it out of the car if you like.

Thanks for the confirmation. A close up of the hole would be interesting, just for curiosity, but I do believe you both! I'm, just used to the '88 Turbo S having unexpected differences to other 951's.
