For those using Mobil-1, I was wondering if your having problems obtaining certain weights. In the suburban Philly area, it is tough to fine 15-50 even in Qrts and the 5 Qrt bulk is not packaged that way any longer. I was wondering where your getting your oil?

The only M1 oil sold in the U.S. that I would use is 0W-40, a Euro formulation. Most M1 U.S. oils have relatively low HTHS and don't meet Euro car requirements.

I wont use anything but Brad Penn or VR-1 in a 44, I believe Porsche forgot about us when Mobil became a major sponsor and supplier for the newer cars.

My advanceautozone has 15W-50, but why not just use 0W-40?

The Mobil1 15w-50 is supposed to have more zinc phosphate. I haven't had it tested so cannot confirm or deny.

Supposedly they've 're-increased' the levels of ZDDP in one/some of their products. They have received a lot of bad press for lowering these levels over the years and not telling anyone. This leads to an increase in wear and less protection. The other thing to look for is the amount of detergents in the oil. Apparently if you're wed to the Mobil brand one of their motorcycle oils is a better choice.

i contacted mobil 1 and they suggest ow-40 as the best choice unless your climate exceeds 100 degrees for 5 or more days in a row
i couldnt find ow-40 in NY so i went with VR1 and have been happy so far

0W/40 is too light in general terms.

Lol about their advice. If it exceeds temps for 5 days in a row or more. haha. What, are you meant to put your car in a time machine and go back those 5 days once it's exceeded this mystical 5 day limit for their 0w/40. What a joke.
Be aware that a company like Mobil couldn't give two hoots about some old 4 cylinder front engined Porsches.

I use M1 20-50 and so far no issue. Target sometimes sell them 50% off.

FWIW, a 0W-40 weight oil has the same hot viscosity as other 40 weight oils - hot... The 0W just means it flows better when cold to lubricate the engine better on start-up, which heavier viscosity oils can't do as well.

I'm not a M1 fan but the M1 0W-40 Euro formula is a good oil approved by most Euro car makers and suitable for most applications. The recommendation of not using it for sustained 100 F temps is very conservative and maybe even poor info. as this oil is run in 100 F temps by millions of Euro cars daily with no issues.

Thanks for the tips but there has been quantifiable evidence from real mechanics who work on flat tappet engines to show that low visc (sometimes synthetic) oils increase wear and don't offer enough protection. Especially for track oriented vehicles.

I won't use a synthetic/M1 in a 944 anymore. Our engines were designed around the Dino oils of the day, not synthetics. Sooner or later always had leaks with M1 and question other wear problems experienced. Don't care what they say. I stick with Dino only and happy with Valvoline.
