Default Stock Air Box Fix

Well I wasn't too happy when I went to upgrade to a K&N air filter and found the mounting “tabs” and threaded inserts were damaged in my air box…

I was really unhappy when I priced out a new one…$300.

Fix:
I took 2 washers and used a bench grinder to “shape” them until they fit inside the front 2 tabs, which were not damaged yet I thought they could use some reinforcement.

I took some aluminum stock about the same thickness as the washers and fabricated “tabs” to re-enforce the rear mounts. (I thought I had taken pictures but I guess not)

I then took two ½ inch copper pipe unions (the ones used to solder 2 pieces of copper pipe together), cut them in half and attached them to the damaged mounting “posts” of the bottom half of the air box (they fit perfectly around the "post"...again, no pictures…sorry).

I used a good two-part epoxy to put everything together.

Because I’m **** or maybe just an *** I will likely spend the $300 down the road but for now this simple inexpensive fix is rock solid keeping my air box leak proof.

I live in NJ and the weather has been in the 90's for the last 2 1/2 weeks...Long story short...I haven't driven it yet.

Though it would be nice to see a 20hp gain, I really don't expect any gains other then I think the K&N is a better filter then paper.

I went from stock filter to K&N and there was no Hp change.
The k&n is cleanable and stock is throw-away.

My stock box had broken tabs, too, and I got a box from parts heaven.

Great job on fixing that airbox. Very resourceful!

Actually, that's a misconception. The K&N cloth tends to let through a lot more grit and dirt than the stock paper element.

K&N are best used in track applications, where maintenance is the norm, rather than for the street, where you just fit it and leave it for months to collect dirt, leaves, etc.

Paper is better at stopping all this stuff than oiled cloth.
