Default Axle Differences

Wondering what the major differences are between late and early 951 axles. Also is there a difference between 944 na and 951 axles? I know there are differences in the # of splines but wondering if there is any length or structural difference. I have about 6 axles and cv joints laying around that seem to be in good shape and would like to reuse stuff I have vs buying new ones. Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks
Brian

Brian,

OEM axles/CV's have the Porsche part number stamped on the CV joint bodies. the 951 joint is 951 332 901 00, or a variant of.

I would only use 951 part number CV joints, if I were you. You cannot check for a good CV without pulling it apart, and checking the grooves. Any signs of odd wear, excessive wear or pitting then throw them away. Sometimes the carrier will crack aslo, which is reason for discarding

They are easy to rebuild but messy. There are aftermarket ones out there, and by all accounts very cost effective, but I prefer to use OEM and rebuild.

If rebuilding, put on new boots is cheap. If you haven't done so already drill and wirelock the fasteners, which are perfectly good to re-use.

I am down to my last CV joint so if you have too many, I can always relieve you of one.

Bolting up has nothing to do with it.

this is true

but in regards to his question involving NA vs turbo axles, pelican shows the same axle being used on NA's from 85.5 on as on 951's through 87.

same goes for those years and the CV joint kit.

However, Brian is questioning which of the shafts he has, are worth rebuilding. Not whether or not he can buy an aftermarket shaft that will fit his car. The answer (IMO) is only rebulld OEM driveshafts /CV's and only those with a 951 part number, and only if the grooves are clean.

Im planning to inspect all the shafts & CV's I have but was wondering if there is any strength or length difference between any of them. I've noticed one set is a little bit shorter than others. I plan to take the CV joints apart to check for wear. Assuming the CV joints are good Im just trying to determine if the axles are all interchangable in terms of NA vs Turbo.
