Rear taillight sealer ... info Please
Hi Guy's
Does anybody know "what is" and where can I buy the "black putty like" sealer used to seal the rear light? This is the stuff which does not go hard and remains pliable.
I actually need this for another job other than the rear light, but this stuff is what I'm looking for.
It is also used to seal the black cover over the fuel filler pipe found inside the rear trunk when removing the side carpet to access.
Many thanks in advance ... I've tried searching high and low with no success
Best regards,
Mark

If it's the black tar your referring to it's called butyl tape.
I have 2 roles of it and used a roll to seal the heater assembly on my car.
Made by Pro Form PF 412 3/8th round
another roll Pro Form 410 5/16th round
Bought mine at Acklands Grainger. $10 for 15 foot rolls
Pro form products LTD
604 McGeachie Drive
Milton, Ontario Canada

Non sagging solid butyl tape designed to use for installation of back lights.

Why are you guys still using goo? Make yourself some gaskets instead. EPDM foam rubber bulb seal 3/8" overall width, 7/32" overall height with an adhesive back. McMaster Carr part number 93085K674. Where it comes together at a tight corner, split the angle between the two sides and glue the pieces together with cyanoacrylate adhesive. There's no oozing, the tail light is easy to remove and it's reusable. It also works on the blower fan assembly too, but you may need to put a second layer of it in the groove.
And in the same token, you can make your own side marker light seals too. McMaster Carr part number 8605K41 for EPDM foam cord, 6322K11 for santoprene cord.

The non hardening 3M tape/goo is the way to go, for non permanent sealing. Weather strip adhesives or RTV are not the way to go. They may work well for sealing, but will make disassembly difficult.
Even with the correct material, the lights can sometimes be tough to get out.
Porsche do things for a reason, and the OEM design is very effective.

Thanks everyone, this has been a great help
I ended up buying the Butyl Sealant Bonding Strip which I located on UK eBay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...fvi%3D1&_rdc=1
I will also order the 3M tape and give that a try to compare but trust they both do the same job.
The application I'm using it for is to seal the lower rear quarter windows on a 993 where the factory used these very same products along with the weather strip located at the bottom of the front side windows to stop water ingress into the doors.
Best regards,
Mark
