Default Drive train - Remove as one!

After a "houston we have a problem" moment which included a blown motor and resulting fire I am in the process of taking out the entire drive train and media blasting the underside of the car. The transaxle is being removed as well to facilitate the installation of an S2 ring & pinion.

We practiced last weekend by accomplishing the same task on my spare wrecked '87 951. It was pretty cool so I wanted to do a thread on the next one.

Number 2 let go and punched some big holes in the pan which ignited 7 quarts of Amsoil We will determine the cause when we tear it down.

Cryo treated a new ring and pinion from the fatherland purchased through Eric at G Box. I already have a GT Dif, Kokeln mount and Lindsay short shift front and a custom shift block on the trans.

To be fair, the picture from the back looks waaaaay badass. Wish I could get those sorts of flames on hard/rich upshifts lol.

The funny part is that the inside exhaust pipe is the only area not blackened!

Chris, I sent you an e mail about machine work. When we pulled the plugs they were white too.

White plugs is not good sign – but then again a large fireball is not a good sign either!

I got your email – I have a mental block when it comes to linking real names with screen names. When you mentioned that you emailed me I only made the connection because the cool fireball picture showed the car with your last name on it!

I once instructed somebody for most of a weekend before he told me his screen name….and then I realize that we had swapped posts before – and I knew a lot more about his car than he did!

Congrats. Very cool, and nice shop!

Do you unbolt everything on a creeper, then lift the body off?

pull fascia (four bolts)
Removed the radiator (for protective purposes)
Coolant hoses
clutch hydraulic line
exhaust
dme/klr harness
shock bolts - top
fuel filter
torsion tube carrier bolts
trans cooler bracket
front sway bar
disconnect A arms
starter shields
two tunnel brackets

and a few other bits I have forgotten

Then, in the rear, all we have left is two bolts on the trans carrier bracket. In the front we only have the four bolts holding the front cross member.

Lift body to seperate.
