It's been so long since I've had oil in the car. I believe I was using Mobile Synthetic 5/40.

OH KNOW....not another oil bashing thread. I'll check what's in my shop when I get home. Maybe this is what I've been using on my daily. I haven't had oil in my car for almost a F****** YEAR!

I'm not a big fan of the Mobil 1.
I was curious what the original poster who was seeing high temps is using.

He said 15w/40 Mobil in the other thread. I suggested to check out the ZDDP and detergent content in that particular oil. I believe Mobil has 'come back' with some more appropriate oils for our cars in their range but I'd be picking something else just the same.

George, sorry didn't want to start one of those again....

Back to oil coolers, I am running a 17 line oil cooler and placed in front of the radiator where the air conditioner coil was. I live in Houston so as you might expect the temps get high. I have had no issues with high oil temps with it mounted here.

Oil is like a religion. Everyone has their favorite and can spout off all sorts of facts to support their position. I've always run Mobil 1 in my cars, never had a problem and have driven 100's of thousands of miles on it, including track miles. The only cars I haven't used it in were my BMW's, as they have specific oil you can only buy from the dealer.

IMO, I seriously doubt that any one oil is so bad that if you run it your motor is going to implode.

I am going to run the new Gulf oil. It’s a little salty but you can pick it up at many southern shores. Ask for the Pelican free variety….

BTW – another batch of radiators w/oil coolers were shipped out this week – hopefully there will be some more feedback in a while.

Not wanting to ignite a religious war. I just refer people to this thread. Lots of very good info compiled by actual experts who work with Flat Tappet motors all the time. http://tiny.cc/g3tfd

For oil, LN engineering (they make 911 motors) tested a lot and found swepco or Brad Penn is very good. I use the Brad Penn because I can get it at the local speed shop.

For a cooler, I got a 2nd gen RX7 cooler (FC body) and had a new end tank welded up. I used the fitting John recommended and -12 an line. I get to about 240-250 degrees after a 35 minute track session in 80 -90 degree ambient air.

I think another area to help oil cooling is to insulate the exhaust where it crosses near the pan. insulating mine with alumina blanket and stainless steel foil helped by a minimum of 10 degrees. Do not underestimate the radiant heat generated by the exhaust. The alumina helps insulate and the stainless foil reduces the radiation as well as protects the alumina from the elements and any oil saturation.

Doc - I started running Brad Penn oil in my car this summer, which has many zealots for use in older Porsches. Turns out there's a local source in Berthoud of all places. It was ~$55/case of 12, which for high end snake oil ain't bad. The place is a highly regarded Bugatti restoration shop, it's worth going there for no reason other than to drool over all the Bugs in the shop.

To be clear, I don't think any name brand oil would cause the temps you're seeing, as you said I think you need to get the car healthy and right and then try and draw some conclusions about oil temps.

Funny Chris. What do you run in your cars?
