Default Steering notch?

I've lately been noticing what feels somewhat like a notch as I turn the steering wheel. It feels like it's near the wheel but I may be wrong. What should I be looking for?

Universal joints in the steering shaft, or a steering column bearing gone bad. Just a guess...

How can I check those to be more certain?

I think that probably the easiest way would be to remove the steering shaft (goes from the firewall down to the rack and pinion). From there you could spin the steering wheel and see how it feels, then take a look at the universal joints on the shaft. Just don't forget what position the steering wheel started in!

if you are going to inspect and take it off, my advice is to replace that steering shaft anyways. It is kinda tricky to get to on a 951, it's real easy on an NA

I'm going to try and check the a-arm joint first. Removing the steering shaft looks to be a pain.

It might also be your balljoints, they are usually the first thing to go

I have it on ramps now so I can check on the weekend. Do I put a pry bar to the ball joint shaft and see if there is movement?

i would jack it up and turn the wheels w/ no weight on them. If its still notchy its the steering shaft or something. If its not, you could have some air getting into the power steering or a clogged ps cooler.

I couldn't figure out how to pry to check the ball joints. The boots all looked intact though. I'll try to get it on jacks this weekend and see how the steering feels
