Default Corvette - C5 Fixed Roof Coupe or Modified 951

I have a line on a 2000 Corvette Fixed Roof Coupe - good price. I could probably sell my 951 and buy it straight up - thoughts ?

I've always liked the FRC (Z06 look) corvettes, and this one has Z06 wheels and some other nice mods.

Well, you are on a Porsche board, so I can imagine the advice you might get, but reality is that the C5 cars are pretty darned nice, and it really comes down to what floats your boat. Either will be a lot of fun, but it is an apples to oranges comparison.

I am a fan of the FRC, it certainly has a lot of things going for it (bracing from the convertible, upgraded suspension, etc…). Plus it has the stealth and rarity factor. It is a ton of car for the money. I say go for it, it is at the top of my list if I ever get rid of the 951.

I think the build quality of the Corvettes is junk compared to the Porsche, but the drivetrain is more powerful and more reliable, the suspension is more modern, etc. etc. Wouldn't blame you a bit for jumping over to that bandwagon

As a former C5 Z06 owner, I can tell you that the C5 doesn't have the character or feel of the 951. But it does have power, brakes, and suspension to compensate.

Back when I had my Z06, a good friend of mine had an '00 FRC. He called it his "Z07" since it bugged him that I had a Z06. He sold it shortly after I came home with my Z06 for an '01 Boxster S. I'd always been a Porsche fan (and my Z06 was sort of an impulse buy) but had never owned one. After I took his 986 for a drive, I instantly wished I had taken more time to consider my options before jumping into the Z06. While the Z06 would destroy the 986 in probably just about every performance category there is... the overall package felt MUCH better.

I realize we're talking 951 and not 986... but my 951 reminds me a lot of what I experienced in the 986. Good balance.

C5's are a dime a dozen nowadays, too. 951s are a little more unique.

I guess I should have stated in the original post -

I had a C5 for a few years - drove a 1997 off the showroom floor in 97. It was an automatic, however, and I liked the feel of a smaller car with a manual trans - hence the attraction to the FRC - I guess I need to go drive one for a while first !

If I can add 2 more cents... are you sure you want an FRC?

I realize they're a little bit lighter, and a little bit stiffer.... but one of the cool things about the standard C5 is the removeable roof. Back when I had my Z06, my roommate had a WS6 T/A. 9 times out of 10, when we were just running out for a cruise on a nice night, heading to the bar, whatever... we took the T/A - simply because we had the option of removing the T-Tops. On more than one occasion I regretted getting the Z06 over a regular C5, specifically for that reason.

I've had a 88 and 98 vette and 2 951's...love both of the cars...ease of use and raw power goes to the vette...finesse and agility go to the porsche. I will definitely have another vette one day...probably the new Z06....My uncle races one in NASA and does very well... almost nothing can touch him.

Sorry, I'm not much help. In my opinion, it's a coin toss....one day I love the porsche the next I wish I had the vette... Good Luck!
