Default Someone replaced my shifter with a rattlesnake,,,

My shifter has taken to rattling, or should I say vibrating, outrageously between 1,600 & 1,800 rpm. It's not so sloppy in general but the vibration is crazy and has become super annoying.

Suggestions/remedies would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Check your balance shafts. One may be out of alignment.

My first thought, next would be wear on either end of the shift linkage.

I had the same thing and the next thing I knew I had no clutch. It started in low RPMs then wnet across the range and then Voila! no clutch.

I had some strong vibrations "buzzing" in the shifter, Mine was caused by a balance shaft being out one tooth. Mine happened after a belt replacement so there was an obvious probable cause.

Is it a factory shifter? There are lots of possibilities. If you remove all the rubber stuff the shifter develops vibrations.

I had the same problem but it started around 3000 rpm. Turned out to be the rear bearing went bad in the torque tube.

pull up the boot and check the shifter linkage.

Thanks one and all foe the replies so far.

My current favourite cause for the vibration is balance shafts. I have frigged around with the shift linkage every which way and even tried shimming it to make a tighter fit. Nothing I did made a shred of difference. Always at between 1,600 & 1,800 rpm it would produce the same harmonic vibration.

The shifter is stock and the vibration will even occur with shifter disconnected from the main linkage rod!

I had not even thought of balance shafts but it seems consistent with the problem. When I bought the car the selling dealer had the belts and rollers replaced as part of the deal. My guess is that the "euro specialist" they sent the car to fudged the job and missaligned one or both of the shafts.

The torque tube bearing seems plausible too but I will start with the shafts and see what I discover.

Again, thanks for the input!

My whole CAR vibrates at almost exactly the same RPM range...but only when I'm at wide throttle positions...is your vibration affected by throttle position?

No, I can hold the rpm and more or less maintain the vibration. At wot it vibrates only as it passes through 1,600-1,800 rpm. Do you think balance shafts or some other cause?

In theory, balance shafts make perfect sense. In practice...it's a Porsche, it could be anything!

You'd think that if it were balance shaft related, wouldn't the vibration also happen at higher RPMs?
I got the same issue, but it's around 4,000 RPM.
