Red face Turbo Lag

Driving home from a party in the wee hours of the morning. Practically nobody on the streets and the endless succession of lights becomes monotonous, so you decide to ask the 2.5L Doctor Jekyll 951 to become Hyde.

At the next light there's a modern nondescript car in the other lane. Probably a TDI with a peppy turbo of its own. You don't even look at it. The light turns green and as you start to roll into gear you press the go pedal all the way down for uh, maybe two seconds, while the other car jolts ahead and buzzes along in its diesel kind of way.

Two seconds does feel like longer and you sense the anticipation as little 2.5 begins to swell with boost. The tach needle climbs to 5K or so and suddenly the 951 slams into the space ahead covering ground like an aircraft carrier plane slingshot is yanking it forward while you switch into third and pass the diesel in a blur of rolling motion.

This is turbo lag. I kinda like it.

Technically planes are launched off an aircraft carrier by a steam piston and caught by a cable. Not trying to take away from the poetic beauty of your story...

Gotta say I love that feeling too.

And.... This is why I bought a 951 before I bought my 968. As much as turbo lag can suck, I still like that punched in the stomach feeling when the boost finally does come on full-force. Actually, I don't think I ever get tired of it!

I love how you have that feeling of boost no matter when it comes on or in what gear. you can just sense the car got a hell of a lot meaner. you feel like you're pushed back in your seat as the car just squats down.

was this exercise simulated? I like a tad of lag and subsequent rush as well which gives me a second or two to manage the powah.

Luis,

You should put an Autothority chip/banjo bolt in your car. I know it is old news but that experience you described will be greatly intensified.

I have run mine for 5 years now and about 35 track days no problem.

Great to see you enjoy the turbo cab

I do love that feeling, my previous iteration of MAF made my car feel like an on/off switch, but it's tough to argue with the wide and smooth powerband you get with the Vitesse MAF kit.

And some times cars are launched off of aircraft carriers the same way...

Yeah, I too love turbo lag I have to admit.
Nothing like an old Porsche turbo to let you know what "real" turbo power feels like.
I get in and drive my gti and the feeling is immensely different.

Chris, without doing the obligatory "stupid French" joke, I'll just say that video was hilarious. Still wouldn't own a Citroen though.

There was a movie some time around 1994 with Sylvester Stallone where they dropped several Cadillac Allantes out of a plane.

It was the easiest way for Cadillac to move the cars ironically it was the last and best year of that car with the Northstar engine.
