I should add I used the floor jack to put the car up on blocks/stands, but I also used the tranny jack in David Floyd's link to help get the tranny out...

Are tranny jacks like these add-on attachment types worth getting?

Mark, my jackstand are 430mm high - and the resulting clearance was about right. If you go too high it can actually get too hard to lower the torque tube and exhaust down because your arms are fully extended. Not to mention it gets difficult to undo the earth straps in the engine bay.

Adjustable height is 394mm-634mm, which should be a workable range.

You are correct in that you can be too high to easly manage the work too. I have spent many hours under 944s and have found that you can do any job using stands if you not a large person (ie beer gut).
