That sounds like a pretty good setup. Now, to find somebody to sell me some black ones. I'm not sure what to do with the rear ones. I definitely don't like the 4x6's but I don't want to put something nice back there.

Someone just listed their S2 for sale. He has extra set of 968 door panels.
Maybe he would sell them?
Or search eBay for 944 10 speaker panels. The 968 panels come up far less.

5.25" woofer, 4" midrange and a 1" tweeter up high. The panels are similarly shaped, but it has a metal plate behind the door card that the tweeter screws to and the grill clips into and there are additional holes in the pocket area (two rectangular ones for the upper mounting brackets, three round holes across the bottom for the lower mounting screws, a big round hole in middle for speaker magnet clearance and a hole for the speaker connector to pass through. I have a set sitting right here waiting to get installed in my '87.
6.5" seems to be about the biggest speaker you can reasonably install in the rear factory locations. I don't think there's a way to mount 6x9 speakers reasonably in the front doors without some significant fabrication.

Nothing since I got the car. I'm in the process of tearing everything out of the interior, except the dash. I'm putting in some sound deadening, new carpet and a new sound system.

If you're taking out the rest of the interior, you might as well remove the dash while you're at it. It's not hard to do and it'll make installing new dampener and isolator easier. It'll also give you access to a couple of areas that could use some additional dampening that you otherwise can't get to.

1. I suck at getting all the dash apart. I don't care how many times I may do it and as careful as could be, I always break one of those tiny little clips. Why did they build the dash with such thin plastic?
2. If I do this, I probably won't get the car back together before the Hershey swap meet.
