New Dash Cover
Needless to say the OE dash cover was pulling up from years of UV abuse.
This being a track car/street toy I decided to try something different, or simular to the new track toys Porsche is putting out.
The first step was to get an 86 dash in nice shape to delet those pesky heavy air bags (I will prepare for all the safety criticism now) I do after all have 5 pt harnesses. The secound step was to cover it with something that did not reflect in my face, like other fancy track toys. Alcantera would be nice, but very exspensive at over $250 for just the top portion of the dash.
I found a simular materal at the local Hobby lobby. I think I have a total of $20.00 in materal. No it is not quite as thick and deep as Alcatera, but it has gotten compliments by all who has seen it.
The real issue will be the materals ressitance to UV. I am aware that this is the week link, but hey for $20.00 I can redo it in a few years and still be ahead.
The vent cover was purchased from classic 9 leather shop and was is a nice pice of work.
I may cover the top portion of the door pannels in the same material, I just havent decided yet.

I used 3m trim adheasive. You can buy it at any autoparts store and is typically used to hold up headlinners.
I did not have any cracks to fill, but seeing how you cover it I would think some flexable bondo would do the trick.
Yea, I do lust after Alcantera, but I just spent to much rebuilding my fr A arms to spend the extra cash when this would do. Those elephants make great parts, but are exspensive racers!! Maybe next time around Alcantera will be cheeper and I will feel richer!!
As to the rest of the interior, I thought I would see how this materal/my work holds up for a year and then recover the rest of the Maroon vinyl. So far I think it looks kind of cool with the classic maroon plad.

I like it...in fact I may do the same thing to the fiberglass dash for the track car - whats the name of the fabric? and post some more pics!

I do not have the name of the fabric, if you go to hobby lobby or your local fabric store you will find some fake suede fabric. It is suprisingly light. The bolt of fabric did not have a special name, but was in among the specialty fabric.
I to wanted a fiberglass dash, but once I got this dash down to 16lbs (yes I weighed it) I decided the fiberglass one was not worth the cost or fab work to get the vents and all back in.

The fabric would cut down on reflections…and look pretty neat!
