Got my new transmission oil cooler kit
#16
I realize the non-cooled transmissions don't have the pump, so obviously an external electric pump is required, but i don't see the downside to cooling a transmission this way either..?

Sorry, I wasn't try to insult, but now that we are all on the same page.
I don't see any issues with using the drain and fill plugs. As long as you are cooling fluid there should not be any issue with that approch.

Olli, I'm curious why you'd point to the thread about TonyG's trans cooler as an example of the downside of this. I didn't see anything bad there.
I put Tony's set up there, because i think it is just a perfect way to cool originally non-cooled transmission. That would be my route to go as well if i had a non-cooled trans.
I edited my previous post to more understandable form. Sometimes it just difficult to write understandable english, i do it better in finnish
Any plans to market it and any ideas about the price?

Real nice setup olli, I am sending you a PM. Using the drain/fill plugs will directly cool the LSD and R&P in the diff and the LSD does generate a fair amount of heat. I also seems to me that if the oil is cooler, the entire tranny will be cooler. I really don't want to drill and tap holes in the trany unless it is being rebuilt.

BTW, the reason I use non-cool, non-lsd turbo transmissions because they are cheap ($250-$500 used).
If I blow up the tranny, I can easily swap in my Guard GT LSD and swap the rear cover (which I have tapped in the factory location with -6 AN fitting) and be back in business for real cheap.
As far as just cooling the oil in the R&P area (using the fill and drain plugs).... It's better than nothing, but isn't good enough for track use with a LSD car.

adapters
I am interested on the adapters for the oil cooler. Can you tell me where can I find them.
Thanks in advance and regards

any of you guys measure temps on your transmission??
my experience that the porsche design is NOT for track use.
on my 165HP trackcar the stock transmission went up to 175 celcius and more, if i continued driving.
thats 347 fahrenheit or maybe even more if you continue racing without taking a cooling down break.
at that temperature your transmission will blow, eventually. (and thats what they do regularly, dont they? )
i got a cooler with a cooling fan, and an electric pump from Mocal.
but even now, if i drive too long the temperature will be too high.
so this season i'm planning to get a bigger radiator (at least 300x150 mm).
a picture of my current setup: (the air-scoop is now replaced by a electric fan, since the scoop wasn't resistand to driving next to the track. )

Once you get past the diff and into the gears, you need a press.
