Meant to add that I did this because I thought it would look cool but it turns out what I really like is how it feels. The wood is really warm to the touch and the fact that it's round on top instead of flat like the stocker make it very comfortable in your hand, plus it's a bit higher...'just' like a CGT

917/Carrera GT Shift **** DIY

This is what a stock **** looks like when you pull off the leather boot

This is what a stock **** looks like when you pull off the rubber (keep it clean boys...)

Fill in the gaps in the **** with this:

Sand. Sand some more. Sand a little more. Prime. Spray with Wurth wheel paint. Clearcoat and you get this:

Laminate your wood of choice, glue together with Titebond glue and clamp:

Turn on a lathe to get this:

Cut the 'egg' in half, sand, sand, sand. Drill the hole for the button on the top of the **** and then Dremel to fit the metal base.

Spray a few layers of lacquer and you end up with this:

At one point I thought about offering these for sale but it's a whole bunch of manual labor that I don't have the time to do, so if any of you enterprising souls wants to roll your own, feel free! Enjoy.

Anybody notice my spiffy new 'aluminum' vent controls?

My 14 year old asked me how I'd know where the gears were since the shift pattern is gone. It occurred to me that I hadn't actually looked at it since the day I bought the car to figure out where reverse was...

I have never had the shift pattern on my car (Porsche Crest)

But I was thinking of doing this project for my car, but I have a double black car so the lighter wood would not work in my car. I was looking at some darker woods like Ebony...

Thank you for the DIY.

This is defiantly on my list of things to do. I think its number 12432894723423464354 on my list, but I'll get to it someday

Dig it...

I would think that a brushed shift pattern disc would look pretty nice recessed in the top.

Thought about that and might give it a go at some point. Only concern is that I think you won't end up with many rings left, it's basically only going to be the height of the shift pattern (including the height of the 3 prongs).
