Well, for the archives, I can now confirm that the pipes on the firewall, under the hood, are simpy the ends of the pipes that connect to the heater core. There is a rubber grommet/flange that the pipes pass through from the cabin to the engine compartment. If I work up the nerve to swap them out, I'll post pics.

Well, I may be the first and only person to ever change these things, but I ended up changing them out today. It really was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I'll post details and pics later. In the meantime, check out how banged up my leaking pipe was. (Old one on left, new one on right.) No wonder I could not get it to seal. The pipes are fairly cheap from Sunset (about $20 each). Only thing I can figure is that I knocked it around when pulling or installing the motor.
