Around here it's usually rabbits eating the wiring, or mice.
Rabbits here as well, they ate through my brothers harness at the transmission on his Outback. Subaru wanted $1500 (parts and labor) to replace it. Stupid soy based wiring insulation and organic electrical connection lubricants. It's the dumbest idea I have seen in quite a while...

FWIW: we have a cat that has chewed apart a few wires around the house. She esp likes the charging cables

Leave the hood open. I don't know why it works but it does.
