Lots of engine smoke all of a sudden, smells like oil
Hey guys, I just started up the 951 for the first time since driving it on Thursday and noticed a strong oil smell immediately and some visible smoke coming from under the hood. I pulled over and there was a healthy amount of white smoke coming from the passenger side of the engine, and I noticed some smoke around one of the spark plugs (one closest to the nose of the car). On Thursday the car's oil level was perfect and now it looks like it's at the bottom line (although I'm not on a perfectly level surface at the moment, but it's not too bad). Any idea what would have happened?

Hey John,
How much would this typically cost to have a mechanic do for me? And is there a relatively simple way to see where exactly the leak is?
Thanks

you can see the back of the lower balance shaft housing by looking under the exhaust header if the area is wet you will see it... there is a round plug on teh back of the housing, has an o-ring seal that likes to leak... upper balance shaft needs the intake pulled off to get to it...
Can be resealed with Permatex ultra gray (both of mine have been sealed this way and are holding...) clean the area with brake cleaner, let it dry..apply the permatex sealant... let it cure (24 hours) and drive on!
the cam tower rear seal is on a flat cover on the back of the cam tower... 3 bolts hold the cover on, these bolts like to come loose making the seal leak... permatex gray works there too....
other possible leaks are oil pan gasket, rear main seal, engine front seals... oil filter housing... the list goes on and on, the two I listed first were where my car leaked...

maybe some oil got down in the plug recess in the head.. not really anything to worry about too much, Mine all had 1/4 inch of gunk in the recesses when I bought the car, first thing I did was clean out the hole so I could pull the plugs!

Thanks John,
By the way, the car showed 5 bar oil pressure at the same time I noticed this. Not sure if that means much. The spark plug thing hasn't happened again so maybe it was a fluke. The car drove perfectly fine, just smoked.

Is the leak at the nose (front) of the engine or the back (firewall)? I read front so rear seal can be ruled out. The only seal that I can think of that can leak into the front plug is the cam housing gasket.
