About 1/2 a needles width under 4 bar. It builds up kinda slowly like it always has (I've posted a vid a here previously)

I've always gotten about that (4ish) on cold startups, but the needle seems slightly lower than usual. It could be my imagination...should I let the car run a little longer? - to get this reading I had it run for about 4-5 seconds -

I would always have 4 bar + a needles with above at 5,000 rpm and when cruising at 3-3.5K rpms for extendend amounts of time I would get 4.5+.

 

I'm going to vote for NOT a rod, as well.

Is the sound louder under the car vs. under the hood? If you can't either kill the sound or drastically diminish it by pulling plug wires, then its not a rod.

I've never heard a bad lifter be as loud as a rod knock, but I'm not an expert on these engines. I guess its possible.

Total dead lifter is what it sounds like to me... you could try to pull em, soak em, flush em, soak em, reinstall... or just replace from the get go...

 

I agree that it's a bad lifter.

I just got home from work and tried to spend solmetime with my ear and a screwdriver to isolate the knocking. Had trouble, but its possible its coming from the cam tower. While doing this, I noticed the knock goes away at higher rpms (2700-3000+rpm) ?

 

Have you tried seafoaming your engine and oil change to 20-50? MIGHT clean up the lifter enough to let the oil flow into it again...

Short of that, pull the cam tower, cam and lifters.... MIGHT be able to rehab the lifters, but probably need a new set...

 

+1 on lifter noise.
I've had exactly that noise more than once over the years, both on 8V and 16V 944:s....always cleared itself after warmup/driving !

what does a rod knock sounds like if that is a lifter noise?

 

So I'm just leaving work now and I am trying to decide between running it long enough to warm up or tear it apart and check the lifters.....Will update later either way.

FWIW, I still suspect rod knock after hearing rod knock in other cars and listening to other videos people have posted with knocking '44s...not to say I don't hope its the lifter. Hopefully I'm wrong!

 

That is pretty loud to be a lifter IMO. It would be worth it to take the cam housing off and look for a broken lifter. Just in case.

 

Also could be an exhaust leak, but I'd bet lifter too. A mechanics stethescope is cheap ($10 or so) and would likely confirm. You can also try pulling the cam tower plugs one at a time to help isolate the source of the noise.

Was the smoke in the cabin burned exhaust (like an exhaust leak) or burning oil smell (like you missed the fill tube)?

 

If it were rod knock that was that noticable on cold start up then the oil pressure would be really low - and close to zero once warmed up.

Its not just the 'normal' sticky lifter - its a fully failed lifter.

 

I would never bet anything on the OE oil pressure gauge readings.......... on top of that I had a car in the shop with #2 and #3 rod bearings spun and it had normal pressure all the time. Just noise and that noise went away on boost.

 

True - I woulnd't bet on it...but it is usually a good diagnostic tool!
