Sysgen, when you say that includes the whole assembly that doesn't include the axle itself. I want to order one of these kits but you said if the inside of the cv is damaged you still need a whole axle. I'm a bit confused. Is it better to get a new axle? it's really expensive to do both rear axle half-shafts and keep it original ($300 - 400) each half-shaft. Or you could go the aftermarket route for half that price... I'd like to get away with just doing the driver's side.

I just had my CV joints fixed and my mechanic pulled them and sent them to a machinist for rebuilding. He explained that they weld new material on any pitted areas and machine back to spec (plus general clean-up, etc.). He said that this kept OE quality without having to buy new OEM parts. Total cost was $500 + 1 hr labour for all four.

For what it's worth, he said that he wouldn't put cheap aftermarket CVs/axles on a car that saw track time.

On my first post I was wrong, I forgot that the part where the bearings are is detachable. So if you order that kit, you should be ok but it would be good if someone else could confirm. Looking at the below picture, everything seems to be included.

Sysgen, check out http://www.bimmerspecialist.com/cana...SENDQoduFtFDA#

They also have the CV joint kit for $105 and the whole half-shaft axle assembly for $305. It would be a lot cheaper for me to order the cv joint kit for both sides $210 rather than $605! ($$$ ouch) I figure doing both sides is best but i might be cheap and just do the affected side for now.

To add: the above mentioned site has a note next to the axle assembly "Axle Shaft Assembly
Rear Left/Right (2 Per Car) 944 Turbo '87 thru Ch#95HN151524 ('87) NOTE: Must replace both sides. 944 Turbo from Ch#95HN151525 ('87)

Experts chime in, do you have to replace both sides when you get an axle assembly?

.... and can you guys tell me what the click clack sound is exactly? is it the cv bolts coming out? i.e. shaft will separate from the wheel or transmission? I'd like to know if i should sent her on a flatbed to the shop or try to limp it there (about 30 minute drive) I don't hear it above say 40 mph.

It is lack of proper lube on the bearings, as the bearings are moving at angles as when the shaft is at an angle it is exercising the range of motion of the joint and the bearings are moving... with bad or no lube they get stuck, the pop you hear is them unsticking themselves...

Should be OK to limp to the shop, just don't try to do any hard launching and you should be fine... if you have been driving it like that, it should take one more drive to get fixed... just be easy on it to get it there

The CVs are one of those things not too many people think about until it is after they should have though about them...

USUALLY when they start clicking loudly, they need to be replaced... any time before then (I try to do mine annually) they can be dis-assembled, cleaned out, re-greased, and run like they were stolen.. but then I use my cars more than most (usually more than 25K miles per year..each)

So i ordered a full axle assembly while i had the car stored for a month waiting for parts and money to roll in. I start her up, drive around a bit --- I heard the noise ONCE, then i never heard it again. I was planning on going to the shop tomorrow to get the axle installed. I'm going to hold off until I hear this noise again... weird how it was happening all the time now it's almost gone.

Update if anyone cares, i washed the car drove around for awhile and TA-DA! cv joint axle sound! clank-clank-clank-click. So i drive her near my favorite shop/mechanic. Get off the highway shift to first at the stop light expecting the wonderful sound.. and nothing. What? how does something get bad and then get better? i drive it so more and again i can't replicate it. Whatever, park it at the shop, i'm sure my mechanic will see what is going on. I got my brand new axle pre-packed with grease! ready to bolt on..

yeah, it usually makes the noise when it is warmed up. When mine was going, there was no noise for the first 10 minutes then it would slowly get louder!
