Default Installing ARP head studs

When installing the head studs what have you guys done to clean out the holes in the block first?

Has anyone noticed that they thread in further in some holes than others? Does this indicate that there is debris in the holes?

Tap the threads with a bottoming tap and make sure there is no fluid in there (cleaner, water or oil oil).

Tom McGuinn passed on this great tidbit when I did my ARP's. If you don't have the bottoming tap you can grind the bottom of one of your old head bolts flat, then take a triangular file and cut a vertical groove in the bottom 1/2" of the threads. It acts like a thread chaser and cleans out the old Loctite and gunk completely. Blow any loose stuff out with brake cleaner and compressed air. Works like a champ.

Don't forget to set the correct height above the deck.

Were you guys able to get the factory studs out yourself or did you have to take the block to a machine shop to get it done?

You can almost always get them out if you have a threaded collet style stud remover from Snap-On and a big T-Bar wrench to avoid side-loading. If the motor is out, map gas on the block where the threads are helps break down the factory loc-tite. If you use double nuts or accentric style stud removers, your odds of success go down a bit...

PB Blaster and patience are the biggest help.

Took me 3 days to get mine out, I put on PB and tried to turn.....if no turn put on more PB and wait another day. We had the right tools.
