Default Help me troubleshoot a soft brake pedal

I seem to have an intermittent problem with a soft feeling brake pedal. Sometimes the brakes seem absolutely fine and grab very well. Other times, like today, you have to REALLY put a lot of effort into the pedal to get it to stop the car.

Here's what I've done so far to try to figure it out:
bled the brake lines
checked the brake booster, which appears to be fine
checked the vaccuum pressure all throughout the vaccuum system for consistency
changed all of the vaccuum lines

I've got nothing.

Anyone have any advice???
Chuck

I assume you mean that you need to apply a lot of pressure to the pedal - and NOT that the pedal "goes to the floor" or has an increased travel.

If that's the case, there is some problem with the booster getting vacuum all the time. I'd start by looking at the brake booster check valve (it's there to make sure turbo boost doesn't go to the brake booster).

You are correct. The pedal does not go to the floor. I just need to apply a LOT of pressure to it to get it to provide braking power.

It could be an intermittent problem with your brake booster check valve, the plastic valve on the booster that holds vacuum. It's cheap, so I would swap it out for troubleshooting anyway.

j/k - I think you'll find that's your problem.
