Default Messed up on my MAF install ... how bad did I...

'F' up? In my rush to get done and drive tonight, I swapped the two hoses circled in the pic below. Car started up just fine, so I took it for a spin and of course got on boost for a bit, which it didn't like and then the whiffs of bad smells so I came straight home (probably 1.5 miles round trip). Much smoke, I immediately saw what I had done when I openned the hood again, corrected the problem and drove again (~ 5 mile round trip). I saw oil under the car both times I parked. I assume I pressurized the crankcase under boost? Did I just pop the new rear main seal I put in and oil that pretty new clutch? Uuuuuuuuggggggghhhhhhhh! Going to bed.

Mtnman. You did boost your block. Proably amplified a few oil leaks you didn't know you had
and raised your dipstick. Your probably fine, just keep driving and see how it goes. It's
a mistake your not the first to make. Easy to do because of the proximity and hose size being
the same.

Dillon. If your hoses are NOT like that picture, swap them.

Yup - picture is how it's supposed to be. I had the two hoses circled swapped. Thank you Mr. Lindsey (not sure if that was Dave or Mike). I thought I had the engine sealed up good (no leaks) ... until now .

You pressurized the crankcase. Clean up any spilled oil on the engine, drive it and monitor any more leaks (hopefully none none to be found).

it may have just pushed some oil out past the seals but that doesnt mean they are bad. I know someone w/ a SC that had a similar issue and the dipstick kept popping out. Fixed the problem and no oil leaks afterwards.

Just got back from cruising around a bit and putting some gas in. There's still a small oil drip coming from the rear of the engine. Can't believe what an idiot I am - it was so nice to have a clean garage floor..... Going to have to find out where it's coming from now.

Car runs very good with the Vitesse MAF and 75# injectors! Started right up, smooooth idle (that semi-sequential mode is just awesome), and runs well overall.

You know what I've been up to instead of playing with the AFM now, John ... I'll be shooting an email your way soon.

I was really hoping the leak would just stop, but I don't think I'm going to be that lucky.....

Oh, and Happy Father's Day to all you dad's out there!!!!!

I believe I did the same thing in my MAF install. My oil leak was at the balance shaft end caps. One of the weakest links. It spilled a lot of oil onto the crossover in roughly my 100 mile drive. However, my 100 miles were pretty hard...so unfortunately...my car needed some repair work done to the BS end caps.

Monitor your leaks and oil level religiously. If problem persists, check the BS end caps.

I was actually thinking/hoping it might be a balance shaft seal ... but I'm not sure if getting to that is any easier than the clutch (I would think it is). I'm cleaning up while babysitting and getting ready for the folks to come over. I'm hoping to have enough time to at least get her up on the blocks/stands to try to find the leak.

The car runs really, really strong and very smooth. Just wish I could enjoy it without this cloud hanging over my head now.....

Yea, it sucks for sure. Just pop the intake manifold off and smear some high temp RTV on the upper end cap, and do the same for the lower. It's a good trick that will last years. Be liberal as well. And of course clean the area really well prior to putting the RTV on lol.

Sorry about that. While I really doubt you caused a leak in your rear main seal, you can actually peek up under there (on your back under the car) without removing anything and usually see if it is leaking oil from the seal. Could be the oil pan gasket too -- those things don't need much excuse to leak...

Here's the finished product. A tight fit, but do-able. I had to scrunch down the air filter to get the hood to go down with the headlights down - still need to mess with that more. Did not cut/grind the bump down, but definitely will (do something) when I upgrade the turbo. Took Dad for a father's day cruise (he raced stock cars a bit in Milwaukee in his youth and has had his share of go fast toys). He was grinning ear to ear.
