Default Horrid rattle at 3K rpm

I've gotten a really bad sounding rattle at around 3K rpm. Sounds like nuts and bolts in a coffee can being shook violently. Sounds like it's coming from the rear of the head. Car is smooth throughout the rpm range, and power is fine. Rattle goes away around 4k. Oil pressure is fine. I'm really hoping it's an exhaust thing or heat shield, but I am guessing not. Sounds like something is flying around in the engine.....not cool.

Check the heat shield above your exhaust manifold,

Don't have one above it, but there is one below that protects the oil filter/ hoses etc. It seems tight.

I don't like the sound of it either, try a mechanics stethoscope to isolate where its coming from.
Try changing the oil, check for debris, maybe what's making noise will come out. Of course if something does come out you still are likely to have a problem.

It could just be a loose bolt/nut. Take a close look at everything and pray that's what it actually is/

I think it is a heat shield. I was poking around to check for looseness, with a long screwdriver and the metal on metal sound is almost exactly the same as what I'm hearing. Haven't found anything loose yet, but am resting much easier!!!!!!

This is an issue on my car ... really obnoxious. One of the studs for the shield near the starter is sheared off.

If it was TT bearings I would think it would get worse as the rpms increase and be audible across the entire range. Just my hypothesis though, someone who's had TT bearings go out chime in.

I haven't had a chance to get under there yet, but should this weekend. It's got the resonant frequency of the heat shield under the exhaust manifold, so I'm almost positive it's a shield, but seems to be coming farther back. Maybe wastegate area. I'll post who had the correct answer when I find out. Very annoying! (and scared the sh*t out of me at first when I thought it was the engine!!)

I dropped a wrench above the starter once and i never found it, and I was like damn this car sounds like it has a chain dangling at 3k rpms.

Come to find out my missing wrench was the culprit.

Moral of the story: Something is loose and is bojangling in your engine bay

Found it- it was the heat shield that is (was) tack welded to the lower section of the header pipe, fairly close to the wastegate. Lower tacks are broken, allowing movement/noise. Should be able to get this piece re-tacked at an exhaust shop for like $20 bucks- doesn't need removed, it's just the lower part.
