Default D90s as track wheels? Opinions?

I was considering getting a set of 16" D90s for my S2 as track wheels. Reasonable choice, given the fact that I may be able to get these at a reasonable price?

My impression was that the D90s weren't too heavy... I've got replica 17" turbo twists on my car from the PO, which look nice, but are quite heavy.

Any other suggestions welcome. How do the boxster wheels shape up, for example? I see quite a lot of boxster wheels going fairly cheaply as people upgrade...

Mark, the collective wisdom from the forum over the years has concluded time and time again that factory wheels make the best (strongest) track wheels on a budget and that 16" are better than 17".

The most common setup with factory wheels for track applications that I've heard are 16" Phones or D90s in the same widths front and back, so they can be rotated. Make sure to use steel lugs in place of the factory aluminum ones. Have fun!

D90s and phone dials weigh about the same and are fantastic track wheels. If you run 8" wheels all the way around and 245/45/16 tires, you'll be very happy. The only downside to this setup is that there are far more choices in 17" tires than 245/45/16. Toyo decided to produce the R888 in 245/45/16, so we should have acceptable, somewhat reasonably priced treaded R compounds in this size for a long time to come. However, the Nitto NT01 is not available in this size, and I have a feeling that whatever replaces the MPSC won't be either.

Yep, I think the only better track wheels you could find are the 16" magnesium D90s I have on mine—they came standard on ’89 model year Turbos in the UK. You can tell them apart by the grooves around each hole in the wheel when viewing from the outside. As well as being lighter, they’re shaped to channel a little more air in to the brakes for cooling.

Magnesium - are you sure about that ?

Or maybe they are the Clubsport rims? - forged alloy rather than cast D90's

He is talking about the turbo S forged rims...not magnesium!
Those are strong and light.
Another option for forged rims is the 928 ‘sewer lids’ – usually they are very cost effective.
Some of the later factory 17” rims are not as strong as the earlier stuff…still much better than the cheap aftermarket crap.

The D90 set I'm considering is a stock S2 set -- 2 x 7" and 2 x 8".

If I went 225/50 all around on these rims, would that be advisable? The reason I was thinking along these lines is so I could rotate the tyres front to back, if need be, even if I couldn't rotate the wheels.

If this is not advisable, what would be a good choice for sizes for track use on 2x7" and 2x8" rims?

If you're making any power at all 225s will hold you back in any type of competition. I competed in a couple of autocrosses with 225/50/16s all around on stock phone dials, it was not an optimal setup. I think our cars need at least a 245 in the back to take advantage of the power and torque we have. If you're going to spend the money on track tires, you might as well get something with some width.
