I'm having the entire car wet sanded and buffed before any color matching or blending starts.

Anyone local who might be interested, I know a guy who does a great job wet sanding and will do an entire 944 for 150 bucks. I could do it myself but well... I just don't want to!

Blending can be difficult but modern technology makes it pretty simple using color match. If the amount of money saved by just painting half is significant, white shouldn't be too hard to blend but a complete job is best. I love pearl white but a color change might change resale since the original color can always be found somewhere.

Do the solid color cars (e.g. Alpine White) have a factory clear coat? I've seen conflicting info on this... one source suggested that later cars all had clear coats, whereas for earlier cars only the metallic finishes had them.

Anyone know for sure?

I can only speak for my 89 944 turbo but it had no clearcoat and I dont think any solid colour cars did...only the metallics. I repainted my entire car about 3 years ago with the same 2 pack paint. If I were lorax I would do the entire car...he will be glad he did in the end.

I have an Alpine white car and had the opportunity to park next to one of the Pearl cars. The Pearl car was interesting because of the novelty, but I liked my color better. I think the white shows the body lines of these cars best, but of course that is a personal opinion.

Late Brilliant Black (non metallic) did not have a clear coat. Makes it really hard to hide minor scratches, etc., but when waxed and clean it's really something else.

The cost is far lower though. Plus me doing all the detrimming and much of the body work, it means more time.

Right now I'm paying 1000 for the whole front end blended onto the doors and the rockers are being painted as well. I'm only doing this because there were some major flaws and I did some body work up front.

If I did the whole thing it would be closer to 2500.

You guys are so liberal with other peoples money

If I just paint the front that means I will have money left over for 968 mirrors and handles.. and the new head unit I'm buying

What's the paint code for that colour? I'll have to check my S2... it's a non-metallic black.

Edit: Nevermind, mine is paint code L041 - "Black". "Brilliant Black" was only on the 1991 S2, apparently (mine is 1990).

I'd say Alpine and if you can afford it, the whole car so that it matches in not only color, but age, type, life, process, character, etc. Also, easier to match Alpine to Alpine for smaller, less visible areas like door jambs, hinges, engine compartment nooks and crannies.Pearl is pretty in the sun, but REEEEEALLY difficult to match later if you have a need. It can yellow faster as well. It tends to act a bit diffrent on soft parts, i.e. bumpers, than hard like fenders, and you'll see that even on new cars. Look at the bumper fascia and then the fender, and the shade is often a tad different.
ALPINE!
