Default 3 ltr Turbo Question

Hi Guy's,

Reading the 3 ltr list got me thinking.
If i wanted to take this route in the future for my race car, is there any advantage of using a 968 engine as opposed to a 944 S2? i know the 968 has valve timing control, but aside from this, i'm assuming both are 16V and both can be taken to 3/3.1/3.2 ltrs?
Or does the 968 valve tming control offer significant benefits on the turbo'd motor?
Or am i missing something fundamental.
And there's no need to discuss ECU's etc as my race car is running a bespoke Pectel ECU & loom

Cheers

Steve

The 968 block has oil squirters and the 968 crank is about 2kg lighter than the S2's.

Cheers Thom,

Those two items alone seem a good enough reason to go the 968 route.

Don't forget to use a harmonic balancer from an S2, because the 968 has a dual mass flywheel instead of the hramonic.

One of the most important reasons!! ...
The 968 motor (Head/intake) make over 40hp more! Huge difference with boost. 1 bar boost = 80 hp more than the S2 motor would.

I am about to replace the headgasket on a supposed 968 engine. First of all the head does not have variable valve timing and the cam bearing caps seem to have dates like 87 3 and 87 4. This leads me to think its a 2.5 head. Once I remove the head how can I tell if the block is from a 968? I know its supposed to have oil squirters, but I am not planning to pull the pan to check. First I can check the bore size to see if its a 3 liter. What should the bore be? Is there any other external indication as to whether the block is an S, S2 or 968. Since I ordered a 968 gasket set this is very important.

Thanks for your help.

The 3 liter 944S2 16V non vario cam head will bolt right onto the 968 block. The easiest way to tell if you have a 968 block is to look at block code located behind cylinder# 4 on the passengers side. You can get a good view of it from above. It will be a machined flat section directly behind and about 1" to 1-1/2" below the furthest back header nut.
The numbers you're looking for are M44/43 or M44/44.

Yes. The '43 were installed in manual transmission cars and the '44 went into the tiptronic cars. They are both the same castings. More than likely they were built and stored with either a flywheel and clutch assembly or a flex plate so they needed to be identified at that level.
