You can pick up a running motor at very good prices lately. That might be the quickest path to a running car without all the heartburn. After you get your car running, you could stripe down the broke motor and rebuild it.

myself I would pick up another head, throw a new gasket on there with a couple of oil changes and see how she does
look very carefully at the cylinders for cracks
Looks like the t-belt went
that head may have a crack allowing coolant through, or just the gasket seeping.

I'm betting on Jeremy having the scenario pegged. If the cyl walls look good, rebuild head and do TB & WP. Getting a used engine doesn't make sense to me, since you're going to do TB & WP on it before installation, anyway.

How common is it for a cam belt to skip a tooth? We have seen a couple of valve to piston clashes in the past and that would be the most likely cause, but it seems a long shot no? Talking about new parts too.

It's not common at all if the belt is properly tensioned and installed correctly. While it's a bit harder on the turbo then it is on a NA, float the valves good enough (shift hard/quick to third instead of fifth) and you will touch piston and bend some valves. I've seen it a few times on the 944 spec cars (a few were using turbo valve springs). The turbo's typically just kiss the edge of the piston but I haven't seen it bend a valve...............yet (but I'm sure some guys on here have).
