Mechanics say sometimes compression test will blow seals, last resort test.

Where did you ever hear that from? In a compression test you are not forcing air into the cylinders, only measuring the pressure the cylinders can produce via cranking the engine. this too without combustion which would add a lot more pressure to the cylinder.
