Default 88 turbo vs turbo S

Can somebody tell me according to the VIN what differentiates the 88 turbo from the 88 turbo S? thanks.

Going with the pack
is quite monotonous.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the VIN will tell you the difference.
The 'S' package was an option, so it will have an additional option code in the hatch. I don't remember the option code off the top of my head.

Don't know if it differentiates anything, but my car was built in Nekarsulm (SP?) and I've heard that regular 951s were built elsewhere.

I believe the S has an additional support brace across the front of the engine bay

Nothing on the VIN. Option code M758 and visual component verifications required to determine "s"

There was no specific sequence of chasis numbers for the 250hp Turbo S models, which were part of the '88 production run, as follows: US, 95JN150001 to 95JN151874; RoW, 95JN104001 to 95JN101875. However, '88 Turbo S cars are distinguisable by their engine numbers. The 250hp engine is M44/52, with serial numbers starting 47J00001 - 1830 (that is there were 1830 250hp engines made during the 1988 model year). Source: Original Porsche 924/944/968 by Peter Morgan

The frame braces are on either side of the engine bay. Someone has posted pictures.

Not correct. Only 951 cabs and late S2 models were built in Zuffenhausen (cab bodies were made in Helbron, but cars were assembled in Zuffenhausen), like all 968 models. The rest of the 944 models were built at Neckarsulm, Audi factory which was till 1969 a NSU factory.

That Morgan book does not tell the whole truth. ROW VIN numbers are incorrect. For example some of the Saudi-Arabia imports does not have VIN number which suits to Morgan written information. Genrally that books contains some errors.

RoW, 95JN104001 to 95JN101875
Don't know where you got these, but 1988 ROW Vins are between WPOZZZ95ZJN100001-WPOZZZ95ZJN101875.

I'm not even sure if anyone else refers to the 'S' model except in the US?

At least in Europe only 1988 250hp version is the "S-model". All others (1989-1991) are just Turbos. In UK they are called SE, but they have also names for all other 944 models, like "plain" 944 is called "Lux". They also have 968 Sport, more powerful S2 version etc.etc.
You can consider also 1989 as an "S", because it had all the same equipement as original 1988 951S had. On 1990-1991 models most of those equipment were optional. If you check the picture taken from Luis' nice 951 cab you can easily see that.

Factory saw it in 1988 this way:

Right Olli, thanks.
Mine was built in Dec '88 but we term it an '89. It had all the Mo30 stuff so I guess after they did the run of the 'S' versions this is what the stock '89 and onwards model consisted of. I've changed much of it on mine so far, but for it's time it was a pretty neat little package.

Turbo cabs were also built in Neckarsulm, and I believe only a handful of S2 coupé and cab were built in Zuffenhausen.

I have checked two 951 cabs and they were both built in Zuffenhausen. I suppose i have been lucky when spotted even rarer vechiles. Here's one of them

Well, I have checked two of them and they had been built in Neckarsulm.

Do you have a picture with the VIN?
