Default Any Quality Difference between dealer OE Zimmermann rotors vs aftermarket Zimmermann?

I'm about to pull the trigger on a good deal for OEM Zimmermann front rotors for both the S2 and the 951, but I'm curious whether they're made to the same standards as those sold by Porsche dealers.

So, are all Zimmermanns are created equal, whether they're made for Porsche or for the aftermarket?

I had a set of aftermarket Zimmermanns on my 83 that were great new but didn't take long to warp, although I believe the front hubs were badly warped on that car.

Thoughts?

Don't know about vs stock, But I installed the cross drilled brake package from 944online, Zimmerman cross drilled front and rear, Metal Master Pads, stainless lines, and ATE Blue fluid for under $700, 1500 Miles or so since install, and nothing but great braking power and response....

Forgot to mention these are NOT cross drilled. Those are a whole different ball of wax!

I've used a few sets of aftermarket Zimmermans on my race car. Nothing special just OEM-type solid vented rotors. As far as I can tell they are the same but do not come with the grey anti-corrosion paint on the hats that the OEM ones do. Which is fine as I just toss a cardboard template over the rotors and hit the hats with a couple coats of high temp black engine paint, which holds up fine and does the same job.

They have held up fine for me, and the aftermarket ones from pelican or wherever are considerably cheaper than factory.

Zimmermann was just one of the OEM rotors Porsche used. You can also found Bosch units, especially on 951S models.
At least in Europe you can buy cheaper Sebro units, which are actually very good ones as well.

My friend just bought Bosch from Oscaro and we installed them last weekend. The hats are not coated with rustproofing like the OE are. The Zimmermanns are coated just like OE.

The Zimmerman rotors supplied through the P dealers are balanced by machining the outside circumference of the rotor, where the Zimmerman OEM are balanced by inserting spring inserts into the cooling vanes. There are other visual clues to the quality differences, but this is what I can remember without setting them side by side.

Hi, what exactly are spring inserts? Are these slivers of metal welded to the vanes?

I just replaced all four rotors with Zimmermans.
Nice quality, but the hats were not coated.
Now that I put on new 18's, you can see the all the rust.
I'm going to do what Schwank did and paint the hats.

Default Cross drilled Zimmermann rotors

Last summer I bought and installed 4 new aftermarket Zimmermanns with SS hoses and Pagid orange pads. Have driven only about 2000 miles (2 DE;s)and the car is normally garaged.
Great braking BUT the hats look like S__T everytime it rained>
My buddy painted them for me with 1200F Matt black paint and guess what..............rust appeared after the first rain. We think it could possibly be pad dust so I am changing back to OEM pads for normal street use after this weekend at Barber. Hopefully that will be the end of it.

I bought four drilled Zimmermans on eBay from a supplier in So. Cal. For an extra $5/rotor he sends them out for zinc chromate plating. They have been on the car now for 3 years and it's amazing to see absolutely no rust anywhere except the pad contact area which wipes away after the first stop. With the PBR Axxis (Metal Master) pads they have been the best brake setup I've ever had.

Zimmermann offers three different kind of rotors:

"normal" without any coatings
"Sport" with drilled holes, without coating
"Formula Z" with coatings, drilled holes and better balance.(Only if you use either Big reds/blacks and for front only)
"Coat Z" a rustproof coating set which allows you to achive better looks. Same stuff Zimmermann uses themselves (just like Porsche OEM)

The aftermarket Zimmermann rotors I'm looking at are solid with coated hats, just like the 924 S4 front rotors on my 951.
