Default Tach bouncing like crazy without engine running

Just had car in the shop for a no start problem and they could not duplicate it. So they changed the DME relay as a starting point. Was out yesterday driving the car and it started backfiring and hiccuping, then died on me and would not restart.

After I had the car towed to the shop, about an hour or so later and it was good and cold again it started right up? But did not see to be running 100%.

When the key was in the on position the tach was bouncing around like crazy. This will be a starting point for the shop but I want to know myself the cause of this.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Joe

That sounds to me like a bad reference sensor/speed sensor/harness back to the DME problem.

x2. Check your sensors but buy the Lindsey Racing harness for $60..it is worth every penny

Also, did you change anything on your car recently (remove intake, change S/R sensors, install chip, mess w/dme?)

Yup, I'd get the BMW sensors and the harness and do it all and not have to worry about it again.

Thanks. I'm sure I'll here from the shop on Monday. Hopefully the damages (cost) won't be too bad.

IIRC pick say an 84 325e, and it uses the same sensors with just a longer wiring harness. Cost is less than half of the porsche sensors.

They are a lot longer. Make sure they are tied up into the harness and that they don't get down into the exhaust and melt. Don't bend the wire back on to itself since it is a coax cable and doesn't like a sharp bend radius. The factory ones are too short to drop down into the turbo exhaust area if it is connected to the metal bracket on the intake. I can tell you the car doesn't run too well after they start melting.

+1. I used those sensors, and I also took an old E30 BMW harness apart and grafted the ref sensor harnesses into my 951. Its been over a year with no problems
