Default data search - cost to get 500rwhp

can anyone tell me any hard facts on the minimum cost to build a 2.5L or 3.0L 944turbo engine to 500whp?

it's about $10k to buy a ls1 crate engine with 500 crank HP so i know that data, but don't have any real data from someone who has done it on a 944 engine.

please assume i do as much of the work possible myself

whats the reliability of a 500whp 3.0L 944 engine compared to a 500hp lsx?

this is a sincere questions so please give sincere answers that have numbers in them only if you have done it already (if you havnt done it then just ignore this post)

thanks!

LS motor. The price for the 3.0 and supporting mods to go to 500whp is quite pricey. And if something breaks....

LS wins for cost per dollar.

I prefer to use the Porsche stuff though. GT racing and NASA rules.

Like I said in the other thread. Everyone and their mother has some rx/240/944 etc with a LS in it. It gets kinda old after a while.

call Scott Gomes and get an estimate. I heard there's a motor over in a corner for sale, should be good for 480+ to the wheels...if he still has it.

My rough guess (not based on experience or fact):
-$2k for general rebuild items (gaskets/rings/bearings/belts/etc.)
-$5k for turbo/intake sensors/ECU
-$4k for pistons/rods/crank work
-$2k for head work
-$1-$2k for misc (fuel pump/injectors/etc.)

LS1 is cheaper.

Oh boy. I hate to say it, but if I had my time again I would seriously have to consider a V8 conversion, but I've had a few war stories along the way. Having said that, in 2-3 weeks time when a crate arrives at the workshop door with a 3L motor that will be built as well as anything in the past and may have over 600whp available (not that I think the rest of the car will take that much), I might change my opinion.
Come back to me in a few months and I'll give you my opinion. As to your question re costs, well I would think the LS1 would be cheaper, but somehow not as much fun and still not a Porsche.
Oh by the way. I met up with Markus the other day. He is a great guy and he did his motor within that budget and it went well for a while. With a few minor mods it would still be going very strong.

One question, and this is important. Would you be doing all of your own work, if you put in an LS1, or would someone else being doing the work?
Would you be doing the work on a 3.0 ltr Turbo, or would someone else?

Answer those first, then we can give you a better idea.

Also...as always...what are you going to do with it? Dyno queen, show car, daily driver, autocross, DE or full race. The use will dictate a lot of the cost.

If you have to ask you can't afford it.

I would say search but that doesn't work.
