The stroke and RPM dictate linear piston speed. That piston speed is reversed two times every rotation thus the rods have to take the force of that acceleration.

So a 3.25" stroke in a V8 with a 9000 rpm limit (just an educated guess on the rpm) can produce more piston speed than a 40mm (1.6") stroke engine moving at 16,000 RPM.

Now back to why Oliver rods are so good....

Piston speeds and loads are higher in NASCAR. Laugh all you want at the good old boy sport but they have some solved some serious engineering challenges – a heavy minimum piston weight, push rod valve train, carbs, ‘normal’ ignition – and they get 700 hp +/- at 9k rpm – for hours on end.
B TW – all 944/951/968 have the same rod length. It used to be a popular solution to go with shorter custom rods to fit a 3.0 crank to a stock 951 piston to get a 2.8 engine. Porsche changed the piston pin height on the 3.0 engines to allow the fit of the 3.0 crank to the same block height.

Thanks for posting that up, Rob.

These rods are truly a work of art.
