Default Water Pump Roller 32mm and 46mm

I'm a bit confused with buying some parts for updating an early water pump to the late style and buying the timing belts for a 1986 944T.

One of the stores i use:

Has two types of timing belt kits for sale:

Part# : 10 9320 123
Timing Belt Kit
Contains:
(1) Timing Belt
(1) Balance Shaft Belt
(2) Tension Rollers
(2) Idle Rollers
(1) Mileage Sticker

NOTE: Only for cars with
46 mm water pump roller.
944 Turbo '86

CONTITECH
CAD $308.89

And,

Part# : 10 9320 121
Timing Belt Kit
Contains:
(1) Timing Belt
(1) Balance Shaft Belt
(2) Tension Rollers
(2) Idle Rollers
(1) Mileage Sticker

NOTE: Only for cars with
32 mm water pump roller.

944 Turbo '86
CONTITECH

CAD $233.89

There is a about an $80 difference in price because of the rollers. Paragon and a few other USA websites don't mention two different belt kits for two types of rollers.

They also have the updated water pump for sale:

Porsche Water Pump
Water Pump Late Type Kit Includes Modification Parts. NOTE: Models thru \'86 not previously updated will also require- (1) 944 105 241 04 roller (1) 944 105 213 01 guide (2) 999 084 092 02 nuts NOTE: Also use- (1) 944 106 132 04 gasket Applications: 944
Manufacturer: LASO
Part number:
951 106 921 X $428.89

i'm a bit confused if those parts are part of the kit? or is that just the waterpump for $428.89?

I took this from a previous post regarding belt/WP:

Camshaft

1 each O-ring 999.701.602.40
1 each Woodruff key (optional) 900.117.045.00
1 each O-ring (onion skin) 944.105.321.00
1 each Spacer 928.105.139.04
1 each Seal 999.113.349.40
1 each Bolt (optional) 999.510.022.08
1 each Toothed roller 944.105.027.04
1 each Stud 944.102.216.01
1 each Flanged Nut 944.102.243.00
1 each Locknut N .022.149.0
1 each Washer N .011.527.12
1 each 7 mm Spacer (you can shim with washers) 944.107.911.01

1 each Smooth roller (for updated pump) 944.105.241.03

1 each Rubber seal 928.105.184.00
1 each Belt 944.105.157.04

#944.105.241.03 is different from #944.105.241.04 found in the water pump kit at bimmerspecialist.com

Some help would be appreciated.

I too am confused about what to order as I am doing belts, pump and seals this winter. I have been able to order seals, o-rings etc., but haven't ordered any belts, rollers or pump yet. I will begin disassembly this weekend so I hope to get a better idea then. I am hoping the PO already updated the water pump as the belts etc. were done at 180K. The car now has 213K on it. Hopefully one of the knowlwdgable guys on this site will chime in and help us out.

You could always buy the large roller kit and buy the smaller roller. IIRC it is only about $20 USD.
To my knowledge the remaining rollers are interchangable between the kits.

With respect to the wp, that kit will probably include the 46mm roller. To the best of my knowledge, if you are replacing your wp, then you can go to the 46mm roller.

Theres more to this than can be easily covered in a short note but this pic is a good first look into the differences in some of the belt hardware. Notice the width of the two balance belts. Also, the rollers on the bottom are the newer style (bigger wrench required)

I believe there were two major changes made in the production span of the 944. The first was late in 83, when Porsche went away from the narrow balance belt. This brought new rollers. The cam belt may have gotten wider too - I'm not sure if and when that happened.

Then next, in late 86, with the switch to new water pump - which brought along bosses for mounting the separator bar.

The spring tensioner came along in 87.

Maybe others here can correct me or fill in some of the details. Bruce

Sebastian:

I would bet that you have the updated water pump. So the following list is what you need for an '86 951. This list has been around for years, so some part numbers may have been superceded.

1 each Spacer 928.105.139.04
1 each Seal 999.113.349.40
1 each Bolt (optional) 999.510.022.08

1 each O-ring 999.707.283.40

2 each O-ring (same as cam) 944.105.321.00
2 each O-ring 999.701.652.40
2 each Woodruff keys (optional) N 012.708.2
1 each Toothed roller 944.102.025.07
1 each Smooth roller 944.102.277.06
2 each Locknuts N .022.149.0
2 each Washers N .011.527.12
1 each Belt 944.102.219.02

Water pump

1 each Water Pump 951.106.021.10

The two items below are only required if the car has never been updated or the parts are damaged or missing
1 each Guard rail (for updated pump) 944.105.210.01
2 each Lock nuts (for guard rail) 999.084.092.02

Notes:
1. Spacers and oil pump sleeve should be replaced if they have wear grooves, or burrs which could damage a new seal. Use some fine
grade scotch brite to clean up the old ones, but replace them if in doubt.
2. The front crank seal is prone to leaking if not installed perfectly. I use an old crank gear and oil pump sleeve that I honed the center
bore of to make it easy to slide on and off the crank, and use these two as pressing tools along with the crank bolt to press the seal
in squarely until flush with the oil pump face.
3. The balance shaft front housings must be removed to properly reseal them.
4. Oil seals and o–rings must be thoroughly lubricated before installation. I use silicone o-ring grease on o-rings and multi-purpose grease on seals.
5. For coolant, use a phosphate and silicate free coolant mixed with distilled water. Zerex Extreme Extended Life is one example.

Then you need the less expensive kit... However, it you are going to replace the wp then it is moot as you will go to the new roller and separator (assuming that you buy the one in the earlier post)

Ok I think i'm just going to order the Late Waterpump kit from Bimmerspecialist, and have the shop order the rollers belts. I need my radiator changed too, I already have it. I guess thermoswitch and maybe new rad mounts I can order too. I have to change the upper oil line too. I'm hoping all this won't cost more than $2000.

It is worthwhile to update the water pump. The updated guide is worth a lot.

Why is this site double posting?!

the early water pump did not have the guide bar - and used a smaller idler pulley 32mm. The updated pump has a guide bar and the larger idler 46mm. Cars that came factory w/ the updated pump most likely all had the auto tensioner which is a different roller than the early style w/ the accentric to adjust the timing belt. My turbo came w/ the early pump and accentric timing belt adjustment- small idler roller.
