$3500 951's are great cars.... if you need to have a backup shell so that if you wreck your nice car on the race track you can simply swap parts over and be back in business. Either that, or just as a plain ol' parts car.
For everyone else, you're going to be many dollars ahead by buying a nice $10k 951, because that $3500 951 will be a $12k 951 by the time you've owned it for <2 years, not counting your time & effort/labor...., and it will most likely still not be as nice as the $10k 951 you should have bought when you were considering buying the $3500 951!
There's a reason it's $3500.

Will do John.
I guess what I didn't explain in the first post was that this car has been for sale for a month -- and hes been desperate to get rid of it. He started at $5k after buying it for $6.5k a few months prior. The car comes with a huge stack or receipts dating back from the 80s, this car has been taken care of for the most part. I think youre assuming this is a car that was rarely service and neglected.. I think it has just accumulated problems from the car sitting these last few months. Anyways,
Does anyone have a breakdown of the engine compartment so when something starts leaking/breaking I will actually know what its called? I searched around and didn't find anything. Thanks

I'm not a big time poster, but here's my opinion.... Get the car and start installing parts. If you spend the next 100 hours searching this forum, you'll see warnings to make sure its had a recent TB, WP, etc. Hell, they're all going to get one within the next year or two if they're driven. Same thing with a clutch. If it doesn't act up during an inspection, it probably will. You can figure a clutch, TB, WP, and seals in the not too distant future on your 951. Even a $10K cream puff. The parts cost the same if they're being installed on your $3.5 car. During that 100 hours of forum search, you'll see alot of really nice cars having problems that are worthy of posting on the forum for solutions. If you aren't a DIYer, buying a 20+ y/o 951 may shock you at the cost per mile in the first year of ownership. BTW, I love mine.

now you have to get quicken and set up an account for the 951. I have one set up for each of the porsches Ive owned. it is a great way to bring out all those suicidal tendencies you thought disappeared with acne.

Here's my 1/10th of cent.
Make sure it's maintained well first.
When you're ready for mods don't do like I've done and try to piece together a modification kit. Just save up until you can go to a vendor and buy a complete kit.

Remember the old saying, "There is nothing more expensive than a cheap Porsche". Having said that, I hope you have excellent luck with it and enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed mine!

I would never pass up the oporitunity to buy a cheap car with potential. Even with possible maintenance included, show me another brand/model car that will be as fun with the end-cost of 7 or 8k. I am having to work on mine, and diagnose a few problems, but nothing that keeps me from enjoying it and I always know that if there is an issue, its not like people make it sound. If it's not your only car... Then keep it in the garage till you get the money to fix it up. Not hard, nor rocket science.
I vote yes.
